2023 MPAC Inaugural Plein Air Exhibit

Art of the Lakes Gallery, Outdoor Painters of Minnesota, and Red Wing Arts – The nonprofit organizers of Minnesota's three premier plein air painting competitions in Battle Lake, Grand Marais, and Red Wing – have teamed up to promote our events and painters by mounting an exhibit of plein air paintings in the spring.

The exhibit will be in a different Minnesota location every year. Our 2023 inaugural exhibit will be hosted by Villa Maria, an historic hilltop estate in Frontenac with multiple buildings that was home to a Catholic school and is being renovated for overnight stays and special events.

Eligibility

Up to 60 painters who have participated in Prairie Lakes en Plein Air, Plein Air Grand Marais/Winter Plein Air Retreat, or Red Wing Plein Air may apply to display 2 paintings in the MPAC inaugural exhibit. Paintings must be framed and wired, no wider or taller than 30" including frame, created during one of the qualifying plein air events, and offered for sale. Artists determine painting price, and MPAC retains a 30% commission on sales.

Dates & Activities

Deadline to Apply Extended: January 25, 2023

March 25, 2023: 11am-4pm Volunteers transport paintings from drop locations to Villa Maria and install the exhibit. Participants will receive details about exact dropoff time and location nearest to them. Please volunteer to help drive paintings and install the exhibit on March 25 if possible.

April 22, 2023: 9am-4pm Paint-Out, Exhibit Preview, and Public Pop-Up Reception for off-the-easel display and sales of fresh paintings in Ursuline Hall at Villa Maria

May 13, 2023: Public Reception and Villa Tours ($25 admission to cover cost of promotion and catering) at Villa Maria. Artists bring their unsold paintings home after the reception.
