  • GRA Minimum Salary

Graduate research assistants (GRAs) receive a minimum monthly stipend of $1,550 at a 0.49 FTE—the maximum allowed for graduate assistant appointments. This minimum is prorated based on the actual FTE. Faculty may request a higher stipend based on the scope of the work and the qualifications of the GRA candidate.

  • Academic Year
Graduate teaching assistants in the College of Journalism and Mass Communications are paid $7,550 per semester (.49 FTE), for a total of $15,500 during their first year (first and second semesters of their appointment) and $8,000 per semester (.49 FTE), for a total of $16,000 during their second year (third and fourth semesters of their appointment). Pay for FTEs below .49 will be prorated accordingly.

    Pre-Session and Summer
Graduate teaching assistants are paid a flat fee of $1,800 per 3-credit hour course during the summer sessions.

    Other appointments
Graduate teaching assistant stipends are prorated for adjustments to FTE or appointments that do not align with established academic calendars.

  • FTE (Full-Time Equivalent) and Pay: Enter the Full-Time Equivalent for this appointment. For Graduate Research Assistants (GRAs), the maximum allowed FTE is 0.49. The FTE should reflect the proportion of a full-time workload (approximately 40 hours per week) the student will dedicate to this research, and the pay rate should be consistent with the chosen FTE. For example, 0.49 FTE is roughly 19.6 hours per week.

  • To fund graduate assistants from grants, professorships or contracts, faculty must secure enough funding to support the student's entire appointment (2 years under most circumstances). Requests to fund GAs from grants or professorships with insufficient funding will be denied.

If denied for insufficient funding, faculty may consider hiring graduate students on student hourly appointments.
