    Youth Leadership Development Program
  • The Counselor in Training (CIT) program will help develop skills to make you a great camp counselor and competent leader of children in any venue! This is a 7-week course to be completed over two summers for youth going into 11th and 12th grades. Complete this form to apply for both levels of the CIT program.

    Acceptance into the Senior CIT Program is contingent on the successful completion of the Junior CIT Program.

  • Becoming a Senior CIT is a commitment and a privilege. Acceptance in the program is not guaranteed. If you have not put sufficient thought into your answers you may be asked to resubmit your application. While at camp you will be expected to be a role model to others. Please read the following information carefully before moving forward with your application to ensure you understand all requirements and expectations. It is expected that you share this information with your parent/guardian.

  • Written Recommendations

    Available in hard copy and online.

    Candidates are required to submit THREE (3) letters of recommendations from NON-FAMILY MEMBERS prior to acceptance into the program. It is recommended that these letters come from adults with whom you've worked with in the recent past.

    Appropriate recommenders include:

    • Teachers
    • Youth Group Leaders
    • Coaches
    • Service Organization Leaders
    • Employers

    The following recommenders will NOT be accepted:

    • Peers
    • Family Members

  • Behavior Expectations

    of Counselors in Training

    Camp Sweyolakan believes in the development of all youth. Acceptance into the Counselor in Training program is a privilege and we expect that you meet all of the following behavior expectations:

    1. Be patient and understanding with campers. Be free with encouragement and positive affirmations.
    2. Treat all campers with respect and fairness. Maintain appropriate conversations, attire and behavior at all times.
    3. Discuss group issues with your CIT counselor(s). Accept and offer suggestions.
    4. Help campers with activities. Model always, participate when appropriate.
    5. Be reliable and punctual.
    6. When riding the boat assist with camper management.
    7. "Unplug" when at camp. Hand any cell phones/electronics over to CIT counselor(s) for use at appropriate and approved times.
    8. If you do not meet these expectations, you will be counseled by the CIT Director, Camp Director and, if necessary, your parents. If you continue to not meet these expectations, you may be dismissed from the program.
  • Statements of Understanding

    I understand that program acceptance is contigent upon my completion of all necessary application materials and the submission of three written recommendations.
