Whether you are a new or a seasoned leader, you may find answers when you attend the National Capital Presbytery/Black Presbyterians United Leadership Retreat for leaders from all our DC/MD/VA congregations.
Topics related to Clerks of Session, elders, deacons, trustees, worship leaders, committee leaders, worship technology teams, and much more will be offered. You will have an opportunity to interact with other church leaders and engage in discussions on how to implement different strategies at your home church. Attend the whole or part of the day as you are able.

What are principles of leadership for PC(USA) officers? Whether you are a new or experienced officer, you will learn something new in this informative and inspiring presentation.

Did you know NCP has a network of trained ministry coaches? We will break out in groups by role--Elder, Deacon, Trustee, Clerk –for coaching around the challenges you experience in your particular leadership role.

Polity 1.0 You’ve been elected to be an Elder or Clerk of Session. Now what? Our experienced Clerks of Session will cover the basics of Session administration, including the Annual Statistical Reports for Clerks. (offered during Workshop Session 1)
Polity 2.0 -- General Presbyter John Molina Moore This workshop for experienced elders and Clerks of Session will introduce participants to some of the options and flexibility now available to churches thanks to major revisions to the Book of Order. You will walk away with a greater understanding of how our Constitution empowers your church to do ministry in a way that fits your current context. (offered during Workshop Session 2)
Ordained Spiritual Leadership outside of the (Session, Deacon, Trustee) Meeting -- Rev. Tara Spuhler McCabe, NCP Director of Congregational Development and Mission Ordained Officers are called into Spiritual Leadership of the church. How we live into and practice this spiritual leadership deserves to be constant and not just in our meetings. (repeated twice)
What could you do with your resources?! – Heather Deacon, NCP Director of Business Affairs, staff to the Administrative Commission on Congregational Property Your church building is an incredible asset, but can also feel like a drain on your congregation’s finances and energy. Learn about some creative ways to use your church’s property for mission and the paths that other congregations have taken to do this. (repeated twice)
Tools for Managing Conflict –Committee on Ministry’s Ministry Relations Team Conflict is inevitable in every organization, including the church. How can you understand, manage and transform conflict to enable your congregation to grow and thrive? Members of the Presbytery’s Ministry Relations Team will offer some helpful tools you can use right away, and also introduce the new Presbytery Conflict Mediation resources available at no cost to congregations. Worship Leadership training – NCP Moderator and Ruling Elder Shani McIlwain Are you called upon to lead worship as a liturgist, Scripture reader or even stepping into the pulpit? Learn some best practices for worship leadership from our Moderator, who leads worship in a variety of churches across our Presbytery every week and has some valuable “do’s” and “don’t’s” to share! Creating Hybrid Worship & the Technology it Takes – Ruling Elder Kevin Moore, Church of the Redeemer Presbyterian, and Rev. Nancy Neal, specialized minister This workshop will consider how to cultivate meaningful worship experiences for both online and in-person worshippers and what technology it takes to get there. (Offered during Workshop Session 2)
