This tool aims to help you reflect on what you are already doing to decolonise your curriculum and to identify areas with potential for further enhancement.
'Decolonising the curriculum' is a complex term. In simple words, decolonising is not about removing white male authors from the reading list, but about creating a genuine interest in the forces of racism and colonialism and its impact on the present and on the ways that education is delivered. Find out more by reading our brief Spotlight guides:
As well as being for individual use, the tool can also be used to gather observations from a whole module or programme team to create a holistic picture of the current curriculum so that you can plan and prioritise your ongoing work on decolonising the curriculum together.
If you’d like to review your whole programme, please contact cie@liverpool.ac.uk. We can help you create a form to easily distribute to your module leaders and that will collate responses so you can discuss your curriculum holistically.
To complete the reflection, assess your target module in the context of each question and give it a rating between 1 and 5, from 'never' to 'always'. Questions are grouped into categories for ease of use. Please note, if you feel that the question does not apply to your module and wish to respond 'N/A', simply leave that question blank.
Once you’ve completed your reflection, you will be able to access a growing range of tools, including adaptable examples of class materials, related to each of the following headings to help you continue to decolonise your programme. There are links to the appropriate webpages at the end of each section and you can find links to them all on the Decolonising the Curriculum Toolkit homepage.
We will continue working to expand the range of tools available and would welcome any contributions from colleagues who are willing to share their own class materials, activities, or assessments that are examples of work that contributes to decolonising the curriculum. Please do contact us via cie@liverpool.ac.uk.
