  • Welcome to the 2023 BlueCross Power of We Scholarship Application! The BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee Foundation, in collaboration with the National Association of Health Services Executives (NAHSE) Memphis Chapter, is awarding six (6) recipients in recognition of outstanding achievements in community service, leadership, and academics. These scholarships are awarded to undergraduate students who wish to pursue careers in the field of health care.

    BlueCross Power of We Scholarship

    The BlueCross Power of We Scholarship, sponsored by the BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee Foundation is issued to six promising, Tennessee minority students who wish to pursue careers in the field of health care. This award is administered by the Memphis Chapter of the National Association of Health Services Executives (NAHSE).

    About BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee

    BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee's mission is to provide its customers and communities with peace of mind through better health. Founded in 1945, the Chattanooga-based company is focused on reinventing the health plan for its 3 million members in Tennessee and across the country.

     About NAHSE

    The National Association of Health Services Executives' purpose is to ensure greater participation of minority groups in the health field. Its basic objective is to develop and maintain a strong viable national body of health care leaders to have input in the national health care delivery system. NAHSE has provided a vehicle for African Americans and underserved minorities to effectively participate in the design, direction, and delivery of quality health care to all people. 

     

    Award Details and Application Guidelines

    BlueCross Power of We Scholarship Award: $10,000 

    Eligibility Criteria 

    All applicants must be current undergraduate students. Awardees will be selected by the NAHSE Memphis Chapter and must meet the following criteria:

    * A promising minority student with the intent to obtain a degree and pursue a career in the field of health care
    * Classified as a college Sophomore or Junior by the application deadline
    * Minimum 2.5 academic GPA (4.0 scale)
    * At least 17 years old (by the application deadline)
    * A citizen of the United States
    * A resident of Tennessee AND attending an accredited college/university within the state of Tennessee
    * Enrolled during the current academic school year and planning to enroll in the 2023-2024 school year. 

    Required Application Materials

    * Official Academic Transcript
    * Two (2) Letters of Recommendation: Academic AND Community Service 
    * Completion of short answer questions

    * Short introductory video
    * Photo (once submitted photo will be the property of the NAHSE Memphis Chapter)
    * A mandatory interview is part of the application process. You will be contacted no later than two weeks after  the application deadline to set up an interview. (Face-to-face interviews will be required for finalists.)

    ALL application materials must be received or postmarked by March 31, 2023.

    Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.

  • Video Requirement Instructions

    Step 1: Record one video where you: 

    • Briefly introduce yourself (think in terms of a networking "elevator speech"). And tell us how this scholarship will help you on your path to a future career in helathcare.
    • This video must be 2 minutes or less.

     Step 2: Once complete, upload your file to YouTube. Make sure your video is set/saved as "Unlisted" 

    • Your uploaded video file should have an individual URL link that you can copy and paste. Submit the link in field below.

     

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Should I prepare before recording? 

    We are not looking for perfectly rehearsed answers. The goal is to get to know you better.

    Can I read from a script?

    You can reference notes while talking but our strong preference is to see you speak naturally.

    Can I record the video on my phone?

    Absolutely! It's preferred to keep the recording process as simple as possbile for you.

    Can I edit the video?

    We prefer that the video be one continuous stream of you talking. No editing, adding visuals, sound effects, etc. is necessary. Keep it simple!

    What if I go over 2 minutes?

    The requirement is that the video is 2 minutes or less. Video submissions exceeding the time limit will not be reviewed.

  • 5. Letters of Recommendation

    Please follow the instructions below.
  • This application requires two letters of recommendation from two different people.

    1.  Academic Letter (Teacher, Professor, Academic Advisor, etc.)
    2. Community Letter (Volunteer Coordinator, Pastor, Community leader etc.)

    In the designated areas below, please provide the names of both recommenders, their emails, and how long you've known them. After you've entered their information, it will be your duty to contact them and ask them to go to the link below and fill out their letter of recommendation.

    These steps are very important, your application will not be considered without your Letters of Recommendation. Both letters must be received by March 31, 2023.

  • 6. Academic Transcript

    You must have your official academic transcript submitted to be considered for this award.
  • Official transcripts must come directly from your academic institution.  

    If your school offers official transcripts via secure email, please have transcripts emailed to NAHSEmemphis@gmail.com. You may also have your institution submit the transcript via U.S. mail to:
