The Jeremiah Project recognizes that there is currently much conversation and deep division within the universal church around the topic of human sexuality. Although the topic of human sexuality is a very important one for students to discuss, we believe the best place for those conversations is in the student’s home, and/or with trusted leaders in their home church. It is our desire to cast a wide net for those that participate with JP’s ministry. Engaging in conversations around human sexuality is potentially divisive and does not advance the ministry and mission of the Jeremiah Project.
We desire to create a peaceful community while remaining focused on our passion to point students to Jesus, help them grow as leaders for the kingdom of God, and provide opportunities for them to be the hands and feet of Christ.
As one serving in a leadership role for the Jeremiah Project, we respectfully insist that you refrain from sharing your views and beliefs on human sexuality or engaging in conversations with students, adults, and other Jeremiah Project staff while serving in your leadership role. If the topic does arise with a student, we ask that you re-direct the conversation and encourage the student to discuss this with a family member, their youth leader, or another trusted leader in their home church. Additionally, refrain from asking pronoun preference.
In September 2022, the Jeremiah Project Board of Directors felt that in order to be consistent with its Statement of Belief, the ministry needed to clarify its position on human sexuality. To that end, the Board adopted a more traditional and conservative posture, one that is grounded in Scripture:
- God ordained marriage as being between a man and a woman and that God designed sex to occur exclusively within that union (Genesis 2:18-25, 1 Cor 7:2).
- God created humanity both male and female, whose distinct, immutable, and complementary sexes are made in His own image (Genesis 1:26-27).
JP’s ministry has and will continue to hold true to the Word of God and use it as the basis for everything we do. We will humbly continue to open our doors to all students who seek to know and follow Christ.
Additionally, we believe that all people are worthy of compassion, love, kindness, respect, and dignity, regardless of their position on the statements listed above. It will always be our intent as a ministry to reflect these qualities in following the example of Christ.
Consistent with the ministry’s belief that conversations around this topic belong at home and/or with trusted leaders at the local church level, the JP leadership will never initiate conversations on this topic while at camp and request that individuals desiring to discuss the ministry's position contact the JP office at the completion of their mission week.
** If you would like to discuss your role as a JP staffer in light of the ministry’s position, please contact the Executive Director, Todd Freneaux via email at Todd@jeremiahproject.org and he will schedule a time to speak with you.
