• 2023 Art Shanty Projects Paint-Out

  • 2023 Paint-Outs during Art Shanty Projects' weekend on-ice programs on Bde Unma/Lake Harriet

OPM has two scheduled paint-outs during Art Shanty Projects in 2023:

    Sunday, January 29 at 11:00am to 2:00pm

    Sunday, February 12 at 11:00am to 2:00pm

The event is free and open to the public. Enter at the Lake Harriet Bandshell and walk out onto the ice (consider schlepping your stuff on a sled). Parking can be tricky; the small lot is reserved for organizers and the big lot fills up fast, so on-street might be your best bet. You may paint anywhere in the shanty village except where performances are scheduled to occur or if a shanty artists requests that you avoid a location because it interferes with their project. Sign up using this form to receive any detailed instructions, parking information, and info about free lunch and hot beverages.

Be sure to dress for the weather! It's a blast to be a part of this festive event but cold can surprise you before you're ready to quit painting. There's a warming house for taking breaks by a hot wood stove. Hand and foot-warmer packs are a great idea, and face masks work as well as scarves to keep your nose warm.

Paint-Outs are open to all OPM members and their guests. Participants are not required to register, but it's helpful so we can communicate any last minute changes to locations or weather cancellations. Participants may arrive any time during the duration of the paint-out, but keep in mind that painters may spread out and be hard to find. At this Paint-Out, artists are requested to engage with visitors and be ready to talk about topics around our 2023 theme, The Color of Winter. That means asking and answering questions about how to paint snow and atmospheric effects, among all the usual questions we get about winter plein air painting. ("Does paint freeze?")
