The Medical School wishes to thank all of you who examined in the OSCEs during the last academic year. We hope you enjoyed the experience.

We would now like to invite you to examine at the OSCEs in 2023. The success of the examinations is very much dependent on the examiners and we hope you will be able to examine for us. We understand the commitment which this will entail but we know that you will appreciate the importance of our involving as many examiners as possible to maintain the high standard of these examinations.

The examinations take place on the West Smithfield campus (Barts) of QMUL within the Robin Brook Centre (see map).

We will endeavour to run all OSCE stations in person at Robin Brook Centre although this is subject to change. If circumstances do change, we will inform you as soon as possible. 

Doctors and nurses must be currently registered with their respective regulatory body. However, if a retired healthcare professional has taught on the MBBS or PA course this year, they are eligible to examine.

Non-clinical PhD students or FY1s are not eligible to examine in any part of the OSCE. Please do not sign up.

Non-clinical academics are only eligible to examine in Years 1 & 2. Please clearly state this on the form. 

FY2s and PAs can examine MBBS Years 1, 2 and 3 as well as MSc PA Years 1 and 2. PAs on a paid contract with QMUL can assist in supporting OSCEs in other MBBS years.

If you graduated from QMUL/Barts with MBBS within the past five years or MSc PA in the last two years, you are NOT eligible to examine. However, if you wish to support the OSCE in other ways please send us an email using the address below.

Year 1

Students are mainly assessed on clinical examinations, with elementary level of skills. All clinicians including senior nurses, GPs and junior doctors in training are eligible to examine for Year 1.

Year 2 and Graduate Entry (GEP)

Students are assessed on clinical, communication and practical skills of a longer length in preparation for their activities in Year 3. All clinicians including senior nurses, GPs and junior doctors in training are eligible to examine for Year 2.

Year 3

Students are assessed on clinical and communication skills and practical procedures concentrating on cardiorespiratory, metabolism and generic skills of a doctor. All senior nurses, GPs and junior doctors in training are also welcome to examine for Year 3.

Year 4

Students are assessed on history taking, information giving, physical examination and practical clinical skills. Year 4 is based on specialist subjects. Therefore, would colleagues with the following specialist backgrounds please sign-up: obstetrics and gynaecology, child health, psychiatry, neurology, healthcare of the elderly, ophthalmology, rheumatology, orthopaedics, sexual health and dermatology. All senior nurses, GPs and junior doctors in training are also welcome to examine for Year 4.

Year 5

Students are assessed on history taking, information giving, physical examination and practical clinical skills, alongside clinical reasoning skills appropriate for FY1. Year 5 examines a candidate's competency to practise and students must pass this exam to be eligible for provisional registration with the GMC. Clinicians with a working knowledge of the appropriate standard for a FY1 newly qualified doctor are required.

If you are based at the Royal London, Whipps or Homerton then you may be sent a separate request by the UG Education Dept to examine locally. Please do not double book on requests to examine locally and at the Robin Brook Centre.
