I think I know your dilemma.
Whenever a student enters high school, they are usually bugged by teachers who want them to learn different citation styles.
Usually, those citation styles are rather simple. They include MLA, APA, and Chicago. These aren’t tough but IEEE is another matter entirely.
When it comes to the IEEE format, it is not just different, it is unlike the other citation formats. So, an essay writer can’t say that just because they know the MLA format, they can work on IEEE too.
Nope.
IEEE has its own rules and we must learn them thoroughly.
So, how does one work with the IEEE format anyway? Let’s find out.
Rule #1: No Author, No Year, No Page number (In-text).
Yup. I know this sounds weird, right?
But this is how you cite text in IEEE format. In fact, when I write my essay, I love to use the IEEE format for citations because I do not need to remember the names of countless authors.

Let me show you what an in-text citation in IEEE looks like. It looks like this: [1].
Simple as that.
Rule #2: Allot a Number
That’s all the IEEE format is about.
See, in this format, we take a reference and we allot a number to it. So, if you are talking about a book written by a guy named James Bond, we will allow it number 1.
Then if we want to talk about a journal article that is written by John Watson, we allot it the number 2.
Rule #3: Match the Number with the Reference
So, how does the reference list work in this format? See the numbers mentioned above, they correspond to the numbers in the reference list.
So, when we write “[1]” in the in-text citation, we know that it is linked with the James Bond book in the reference list.
It will look something like this:
[1] Bond, James., [Book name]. [City of publication]: [Publisher name], [Year of publication].
Note that the book’s title is in italics.
Rule #4: Reference List
So now you know what a reference list looks like. But the example given above is for books only.
Let me give you some other examples.
Journal Articles:
[1] [Name of authors separated by a comma], "[Article name]" [Name of Journal], [Volume of Journal], [Page numbers], [Month and year of publication].
Book section:
[2] Name of author(s), "[Name of book section]" in [Name of book], [Book edition], [Book volume], [City of publication]: [Name of publisher], [Year of publication], [Page numbers].
Rule #5: Page Numbers
Page numbering is an issue in IEEE. If you reach out to an essay writing service and ask them to write a paper in IEEE format, they will not include the page number in the citation. But sometimes, they might. Why?
This is because the rule about page numbers is unclear.
However, sometimes, your teacher might ask you to include the page number.
Rule #6: Quotations
Yes, you can include quotes in the IEEE format.
But first, you need to understand how to cite quotes. You can do it by writing something like this:
As mentioned in [4], “[insert quote]”.
Or as mentioned in [4, pg. 6], “[insert quote]”.
See how I have not included the name of the author at all? Yes, this is how we refer to our authors in IEEE style. You can also use the same method for paraphrasing.
Rule #7: Listing Style
As mentioned above, there are many ways in which the different references can be listed at the end of a paper.
The references for books, articles, videos, and book sections are all different. But so are the references for books published in different regions.
For example, books published in well-known states of the U.S. or in well-known countries have the abbreviation of the state or country mentioned in the citation.
E.g.: NJ for New Jersey.
Rule #8: Adding Tables or Figures
First, you need to know that all tables and figures in this format must be cited properly.
Then, if you need to refer to a table or figure then you will use the in-text citation corresponding to it.
In your paper, you will write something like this:
According to [5, Tab. 7]...
This refers to the table no. 7 which should include reference number 5.
Rule #9: Video Citations
Videos.
The rules for videos or any type of media that is not plain text are a bit different than usual here.
The generic rule is this:
Producer(s) Initial(s). Surname(s), Title of the DVD, xth ed. [Type of medium]. Production City, (U.S. State or Country if the City is not "well known"): Production Company, Year of Production.
Also, note that this information has been taken from the official page of a university so it is totally authentic.
So, here is all we know about IEEE citations…
If you need to know more about the IEEE format then your best option is to get your hands on an IEEE sample paper.
You can get a sample paper from an online writing service easily. They also offer other services that can help you meet deadlines and ease your academic burden.
Then, watch as an expert writer gives you the best sample paper that you have ever seen.
