About Georgianna Bonds and Susan Allen

The Georgianna Bonds Memorial Fund and the Susan Allen Memorial Fund honor two dedicated Girl Scout volunteers whose passion for leadership, travel, and service created lasting opportunities for girls. Georgianna Bonds served in many capacities, including troop leader, Board President of one of GSNEO's legacy councils, international travel leader, and leader of a horse troop in Berea. Susan Allen was a longtime Girl Scout and leader in Brook Park and Berea who co-founded an International Travel Group in 1991 and inspired girls through domestic and international travel experiences. Both women shared a commitment to helping girls broaden their horizons and experience the world through Girl Scouting. These memorial funds were established by their family members and friends to honor their memories and continue their legacy of supporting Girl Scouts.

Troops often plan and work together to go on trips. This application is for a troop to apply for a scholarship up to $1,000 to support girls in the entire troop. The Georgianna Bonds Travel Scholarship Fund supports young women in Girl Scouts of North East Ohio who plan to travel within the USA with Girl Scout troops/groups. The number of scholarships available and scholarship value are determined each year based on current funding. Completed applications are due on December 15.

Application Requirements

Currently registered with Girl Scouts of the USA as a youth member
Majority of your troop must be a Girl Scout youth member for at least 3 years
Must live within GSNEO jurisdiction
Complete application form and submit by due date
Include a 250-300 word essay from each girl describing her interest in travel and other benefits that she will gain from this travel experience
Girls may only receive one travel scholarship annually

Selection Process

A screening committee composed of Girl Scout volunteers and staff will evaluate all submitted applications based on the following criteria:
- Application Completion
- Girl Scout Involvement and Leadership
- Travel/Camping Experience
- Explanation of Expected Leadership Benefits of the Trip
- Extracurricular Activities, Including Volunteerism
- Written Essays
- Consideration will be given to those with demonstrated need
Awardees will be notified by February 15

Conditions of Scholarship

Girl Scouts of North East Ohio will make the disbursement directly to the designated Girl Scout troop/group. Disbursement will be made upon confirmation that the trip is approved by GSNEO and that all girls are registered for the designated trip for which the funds will be used.

Short Answer Questions

Please tell us a bit about your troop. How long have you been together? What types of activities have you done? What other field trips, overnight trips, and camping experiences have you had? Have you earned any highest awards? What community service projects have you completed?

Describe the trip that you have planned. Please explain how the girls were involved in determining the Girl Scout trip, the trip itinerary and the trip budget. What did they learn through this process?

Please list other fundraising and money earning activities performed working towards this trip. Include troop money earning activities and any personal efforts. Applicants must demonstrate that they have earned a portion of the trip fees.
