Is Show + Sale right for me?

For 2022-2023, we have 3 selling opportunities available for AUArts students. Each opportunity offers a different experience and has a different difficulty level. Here's a quick preview of what each opportunity looks like:

  •  How the BLIND JURY works

All applicants for Virtual Markets will be juried by 3 guest jurors in a BLIND JURY format. That means that we will accept participants that have a score of 21/42 or higher. Applicants with lower scores will be accepted into the program based on available space and given extra mentorship to help them succeed. Our guest jury will continue to provide feedback to help applicants grow during the Show + Sale program. The score breakdown is as follows:

    PER JUROR __/14

    Technical Execution of artwork: __/5

    Visual Content of artwork: __/5

    Artist Statement and Branding: __/3

    Photo-Documentation: __/1

We encourage you to shoot for the stars and put your best foot forward, as getting a higher score makes you eligible for various extra perks. ;)

Want to learn more about our jurying process? Click the link below:

Our juror identities will be revealed later in January. For now, it's a mystery....

  •  *** Have you been pre-approved for the VSM 2023? ***

Did you get 7/14 or higher on your jury score in Fall 2022? Congrats, you're pre-approved for Spring 2023! Please complete a separate (and shorter) application at the link below. Make sure you have a copy of your previous jury score email at the ready!

Virtual Show + Sale Artist Responsibilities and Perks

Since the nature of In-Person and Virtual Markets are different, and require different levels of training, artist perks and responsibilities vary depending on which Market you participate in. BEFORE you apply, make sure you learn what to expect when participating in our Virtual Spring Market 2023:

  • Applicant Information

The following info is for communication purposes only. Your personal information will NOT be seen by the juror.
  •
  • How can we support you?

The following info is collected so that the Show + Sale team can support applicants and juried artists to the best of our ability. None of these questions are mandatory. This section will NOT be seen by the juror.
  • Support Materials

The following information WILL be seen and scored by the jury.
  • PLEASE READ!

The artwork you submit for this application does not have to be what you sell in Show+Sale! You may revise your inventory before the Sale begins if you are successfully juried in. While we prefer to see artwork that is ready for sale, the jury is happy to view work that has been created for class, has already been sold, or is a finished prototype of a new line of products. Please make sure that all art you submit has been created in the past 3 years.

    -----------

The strongest artwork you can submit:

    1) Can be displayed or used regularly in a home environment. It should be well made enough to handle regular wear and tear in a household!

    2) Are appropriate for commercial sale AND/OR

    3) Are representative of your current practice as an artist, designer, or craftsperson

  •

    Please avoid the following:

    1) Fanart of photographs, celebrities, and characters you do not have copyright permission to. While these are great for practice and personal projects, we take copyright very seriously in Show+Sale. If you do submit fanart, ensure that you are actively referencing your inspiration and that your artwork is stylistically different enough from the original.

    2) Unfinished sketches, maquettes, or unpolished work. We want to see a final art piece! If your work is a prototype, ensure that it is still a high quality piece you'd be proud to show off.

    3) Classwork is accepted, but applicants should consider only submitting classwork that is finished and showcases their personal style, not just a technical exercise.

No experience selling your work commercially? No problem! Our jury system is designed for artists of all skill levels and experiences. Our jury is trained to consider not just the technical quality of work, but the potential of an artist to grow and learn during our program. Our best advice? Submit artwork you are most proud of and really showcase what kind of artist you are.

Please attach 3-10 images of your artwork here with the following naming format:

  • 150-250 word Artist Statement + Artwork Information

Your artist statement should support the work you submit and show off your personality. Tell us about your inspirations, what kinds of techniques you use, and why you make the work that you make. Sell your story to us!

Please ensure that you do not mention your name or any identifying information such as emails, phone numbers, ect in your document. Please use "the artist" when referring to yourself.

For this semester, you will also be able to add additional info for every image you submit, including title, medium, and anticipated price. While this section is optional, we highly recommend filling it out for the best jury feedback.

Download the PDF below and submit it using the following naming format:

  • You're almost done! Woohoo!

  • A Final Word...

  • We call our juried participants "Emerging Artists" because we know they go above and beyond student level expectations in Show+Sale. Participation comes with perks, including personalized mentorship, 1 on 1 meetings, various opportunities for interviews and social media features, and more!

And as Emerging Artists, we expect all participants to act professionally through the duration of the 11 week program (Feb-Apr). This includes meeting deadlines on time, attending mandatory meetings and training sessions, submitting documents in the correct format, and attending professional development workshops. This also includes asking for help when you need it and letting us know what we can do to help you!

Please also note that Show + Sale cannot guarantee sales! While we will do our best to support you, at the end of the day, your effort will make sales happen. :)

We look forward to seeing your applications for our Virtual Spring Market 2023!
