Criteria for the Award of Honorary Degrees
- Academics with an international reputation who have an existing or potential academic link with the University
- National or international figures who serve as a role model for young people
- International figures who have some connection with the University, for example a common area of research
- National or international figures who serve to make a statement about the University’s position on moral or ethical issues
- Recognition of achievements which have not previously been recognised
- Persons with a local connection who have achieved a national or international reputation

Section 4 Conferment of the Award
There will be a number of opportunities for awards to be conferred in the Anniversary Year. As well as the biannual awards ceremonies held in the City, there will be conferences and lectures, both in the UK and overseas, and other special events when honorary degrees can be conferred. Please indicate below the preferred scheduling of the award you are proposing:
Winter or summer awards ceremony
Conference or lecture event (please give full details) to which the nominee is being invited and whether you suggest that the offer of an honorary degree should be dependent upon attendance at that occasion and , if the nominee is unavailable, whether you propose that another guest presenter is invited in their place (if so, pleae give name)
Other anniversary event in the UK or overseas (please give full details)
In the space below, please give your reasons for nominating this individual. It is helpful to the Committee's discussions if you include with the case an up-to-date biographic summary or resume of the nominee, reference to any existing connections with the University, list of honorary degrees already held and merits (distinction or service) of the person as well as the justification for recognition by the University of Bath.
Section 5 The honorary degree process and Strict Confidentiality
Thank you for submitting this nomination for consideration by the Honorary Degrees Committee. The Committee’s business is conducted in strict confidence. The proposer of an honorary nomination should not, therefore, contact the nominee in advance of submitting a case. If the Committee considers the nominee to be worthy of an honorary degree, a recommendation will go forward to the University Senate. If Senate approves the award, the Vice-Chancellor will write to the nominee inviting them to accept the award.
Please note that it will not be possible to give detailed feedback on the progress of a nomination.
