Core Subjects

At Summerbridge, each individual teaches two back-to-back 50-minute class periods in a core subject. Below you will see the core subjects we offer along with a brief explanation of what is expected for that course. Please rank the courses you are interested in and capable of teaching at the middle school level (1 being your first choice).
Math
6th-8th grade level math skills taught in a project-based learning setting. You will select a style of math (ex: probability, statistics, geometry, algebra, cryptology, etc.) to drive the project students create.
Science
Science teachers select a science subject they will teach for the summer. Past courses have included: General Biology; Microbiology; Physics; Forensics; Earth and Space Science; Astronomy; Environmental Science; Chemistry; Natural Disasters.
Literature
Teachers will select a young adult book of their choosing for students to read over the summer. Literature teachers will guide students through the book and teach a variety of literary and reading comprehension techniques.
Social Studies
Social studies teachers will select the subject they will teach for the summer. Past courses have included: World History; Unsung Heroes; The History of Food; National Identity.
Writing
Writing teachers will be asked to teach an academic form of writing and a creative form of writing. Teachers will have a list of each type to choose from and may propose others.
Section 2: Essay Questions

If you have never taught at Lehigh Valley Summerbridge, answer the following questions. Please limit your answers to 300 words or less for each question.
1. Why do you want to be a Summerbridge Teacher? What contributions would you bring to our staff? What do you hope to learn?
2. List and describe three important qualities of an outstanding educator.
3. Describe your plan for classroom management.
4. Tell us a story from your middle school years. How does this experience impact your expectations of your students and yourself?
5. Identify some creative (out of the box) activities you would consider using in the classroom (including the use of technology) and why you might consider using those activities or technologies.
6. Summerbridge teachers design their own academic electives that are often co-taught. In the past we have had courses like creative writing, photography, art therapy, film analysis, health and fitness, mythbusters, and instrumental music. Write a sample course description for an academic elective you would enjoy teaching. Your audience is middle school students. If hired, your elective course suggestion will be put on a list for students to select from and if chosen, you will teach that elective during the summer.

Section 3: Lesson Plan
Please provide a lesson plan for the discipline for which you are applying - you do not have to create a new lesson plan just for this application, you are welcome to send a previously completed plan.Keep in mind the following factors: your students will be 7th and 8th graders, the class size is small with 8-10 students per class, the class period is 50 minutes. Your lesson plan should include: teaching objectives, materials to be used, the instructional procedure, and homework assigned. A sample lesson plan format is available upon request. Consultation with a professional teacher or professor is recommended.

Section 4: 9th Grade Team
We will be running the second year of our 6-week 9th Grade Program. These rising 9th grade students have all been in our program previously. As a team of teachers, you will select a young adult book as the anchor for your courses. As a team, you do not have to teach all of the core subjects and can select the content that makes sense to enhance the understanding of the book (or books, if they are short). An example would be a team teaching a book that takes place in the 50's and the team also has a social studies class about that era. This is a more freeform team with lots of individual, co-teaching, and team teaching possibilities.
