2023 Plein Air Grand Marais is open for registration!
The Competition Class is closed, but applicants may register for the Open Class with the option to be on the wait list for the Competition in case of cancellations. The Open Class will remain open until September 15, 2023.
Painters of all experience levels are welcome. The Competition Class is juried and is intended for experienced painters who can commit to submit four Competition Class paintings for the exhibit at Johnson Heritage Post Art Gallery. An Invitational Class features select painters from Minnesota's Arrowhead region plus Mini-Workshop Instructors and the previous year's Open Class winner. The Open Class is intended for less experienced or learning painters desiring more time to attend Mini-Workshops, who may submit one painting for a one-night exhibit and awards reception. The non-refundable application fee for all participants is $45.
Plein Air Grand Marais is all about artists: we have an educational focus on painters' development and camaraderie. We believe all painters who wish to compete should be given a chance to be in the Competition Class, but we are limited by space in JHP Gallery. Therefore, juried applicants who are not selected initially to be in the Competition Class are encouraged to participate in the Open Class and remain on a waiting list. Competition Class vacancies regularly occur—life happens—and will be filled from the waiting list in the Open Class on a first come, first served basis, based on the time and date of their PAGM registration. To date, all painters wishing to participate in the Competition Class have been accepted, eventually.
All registered artists may paint in the Quick Paint, sign up for Mini-Workshops, participate in daily paint-outs, attend artists' socials and other scheduled activities. The best-in-show award winner of the Open Class Exhibit will be invited to be a Competition Artist in next year's PAGM.
