I pledge to:
Use Less SALT.
Select. Salt doesn’t melt ice when its below 15deg F. Use sand, or other alternatives for traction when it becomes too cold.
Amount. Salt lightly only where needed. One 12oz coffee cup full of salt is enough to cover 10 sidewalk squares, aim for granules to be 3 inches apart. Be sure to sweep up any excess salt that can be reused after the ice melts.
Location. Salt only goes on icy spots on pavement. Do not put salt on bare pavement that has no ice or on lawns, flower bed, or at the base of trees.
Time. Salt works best when its applied after snow is cleared from a driveway or side walk. Salt should not be applied directly onto snow, and never apply when rain is in the forecast, as it will wash away into the storm drains and out to our waterways. One teaspoon of salt will permanently pollute five gallons of fresh water.
Thank you for joining us in pledging to use less salt this winter!
