• SGM Perinatal & Neonatal Loss Support Training

  • Sufficient Grace Ministries provides support for families facing a life-limiting diagnosis in pregnancy as well as those enduring miscarriage, stillbirth, neonatal, or infant loss. SGM Comfort Doulas and Comfort Companions provide support, offer comfort and hope, and help families celebrate the lives of their precious babies.

  • Purpose and Objectives

  • This training equips nurses, chaplains, social workers, physicians, doulas, volunteers, and caregivers to implement a more comprehensive family-centered approach to caring for families facing a perinatal/neonatal loss or life-limiting diagnosis in pregnancy with the following learner results.

    • Recognize the bereaved parent’s perspective and the need for options and resources.
    • Describe the caregiver’s responsibility in helping to create a lasting, tangible memory for bereaved parents experiencing perinatal loss.
    • Apply companioning methods when forming a comprehensive family-centered perinatal loss support program in the hospital setting and beyond.
    • Prepare a collaborative, multi-faceted palliative care team plan for perinatal hospice patients.

  • Training Options

  • The SGM Perinatal & Neonatal Loss Support Training offers multiple registration options to participants including: (Descriptions below)

    • Introduction to Perinatal & Neonatal Loss Support for Birth Professionals (4 hr)
    • Perinatal & Neonatal Loss Support Companioning Method (16 hr)
    • Perinatal & Neonatal Loss Support Companion/Doula Certification (40 hr) (Both certifications include 16 hr. faculty-directed training and 24 hr. independent study - Doula Certification also includes Labor Support)

    Prior to the training you will a receive an informational packet including details about the independednt study portion of the training (required for Doula Certification), the training schedule, and videos for those who choose to attend the introduction portion virtually.

  • Introduction to Perinatal & Neonatal Loss Support for Birth Professionals (4 contact hours)

    Great for Birth Professionals or others interested in learning more about this program. The training includes an introduction to the companioning method, perinatal hospice support, and parent-centered bereavement support as well as an overview for using the SGM Perinatal Loss Support Program.

    Perinatal & Neonatal Loss Support Companioning Method (16 contact hours)

    Training focuses on bereavement support, companioning families, establishing a perinatal loss program, perinatal hospice, labor support (optional), and demonstrating/role play support for a family experiencing perinatal loss through labor and beyond. (See Purpose & Objectives above)

    Training includes:

    • 16 nursing contact hours of Perinatal Loss Training 
    • SGM Perinatal Loss Support Training Manual
    • Access to videos, and telephone/online support from trained SGM Perinatal Loss Support professionals

    Perinatal & Neonatal Loss Support Companion/Doula Certification (40 contact hours)

    (16 hr. faculty-directed workshop & 24 hr. independent study)

    Training focuses on bereavement support, establishing a perinatal loss program, labor support (for Doula Certification), and demonstrating/role play support for a family experiencing perinatal loss through labor and beyond. Completion of an independent study module is also required.

    Training includes:

    • Full 40 nursing contact hours of Perinatal Loss Training
    • Independent Study Module
    • SGM Perinatal Loss Support Training Manual
    • Access to videos, and telephone/online support from trained SGM Perinatal Loss Support professionals

    This nursing continuing professional development activity was approved by the Ohio
    Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing

    This education activity is approved by the National Catholic Chaplains Association for 4 contact hours.

  • If you work for an SGM Partnering Hospital or have a group that would like to attend the training, you qualify for a discounted rate.  Please email training@sufficientgraceministries.org for more information. Also, if you do not work for an SGM Partnering Hospital, but would like to request a discount or payment plan, please email the reason the discount is needed, a bit about your background, and your heart and plans for serving families.

  • To become an SGM Volunteer or Affiliate, you must apply and be approved before registration is completed.
