    The Office of Student Involvement & Leadership Development is thrilled that you are applying to be an Orientation Leader! Please read all the details below to ensure you have everything you need before completing your application and have a full understanding of the Orientation Leader position.

  • Orientation Leader Expectations

    • Work both independently and as a team, and take initiative on projects/assignments.
    • Act as a mentor and role model to support fellow Orientation Leaders.
    • Be an effective and clear communicator with peers, new students, and parents and families.
    • Possess a high level of maturity and an ability to use independent judgment in decision-making.
    • Demonstrate flexibility, creativity, humor, and dedication.
    • Maintain high energy, enthusiasm, and stamina when working long days.
    • Open to learning and challenging yourself to grow in your leadership capacities.

    There are numerous benefits to working as an Orientation Leader, including:

    • Experience in peer leadership and presentation skills.
    • Experience in large-scale programming and event planning.
    • Free on-campus housing in June for summer Orientation leaders.
  • Required Qualifications

  • All Orientation Leaders

    • Must be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student.
    • Must have been a full-time student for at least one semester.
    • Must have a cumulative GPA of 2.3 or higher.
    • Must be free of any current/pending judicial action by the university.

    Summer Orientation Leaders must live on campus throughout June and participate fully in all training and Orientation programs.

    Fall Orientation Leaders must participate in all required training, First-Year Move-In Day, and New Student Fall Welcome.

    There may be additional opportunities to work the Transfer Orientation and Parent & Family Orientation programs in May, June, and August. You will be notified as these opportunities become available.

  • Salary

  • Summer Orientation Leaders will be paid $2,000 for training and all June sessions.

    Fall Orientation Leaders will be paid $15/hour for training, Move-In Day, and New Student Fall Welcome.

    Orientation Leaders working Transfer and Parent & Family Orientation programs will be paid $15/hour.

    Please provide the name, contact information, and job title for two professional references. Acceptable references include current/former supervisors, WSU faculty and staff, and former coaches/teachers/mentors.

  • New Orientation Leader Hiring Process

  • New Orientation Leader applications are due February 20.

  • Step 1 | Orientation Leader Group Process

    Friday,  February 27th, 5-8pm, Student Center Blue Lounge
  • Group Process is a group interview for all new Orientation Leader applicants, and will allow the Orientation professional staff to see all candidates interact in a group setting. Group Process typically lasts for about three hours and includes icebreakers, small group activities, and a question-and-answer session. Graduating Orientation Leaders help to facilitate the activities during Group Process.

    Group Process is MANDATORY for all candidates applying for a position, so please review and adjust your schedule so that you can attend.

  • Step 2 | Orientation Leader Individual Interviews

    March 3rd - March 12th in the Office of Student Involvement and Leadership Development
  • Immediately following Group Process, the Orientation professional staff will narrow down the pool of applicants to interview for the Orientation Leader position based on feedback from the group interview. Everyone who attended Group Process will be notified via email immediately following the group interview with the decision whether or not they have been selected to move forward to the individual interview stage. 

    Individual interviews will be approximately 20 minutes and will be scheduled from March 3 to March 12. If you are chosen for an individual interview, you will be emailed a link to sign up for an interview that works for your schedule. Interviews will be held in person in the Office of Student Involvement in the Student Center with members of the Orientation professional staff.

  • Step 3 | Decision Emails Sent

    Friday, March 13th
  • All candidates who participated in the individual interviews will receive an email letting you know whether or not you have received the position, been selected as an alternate, or if you were not chosen for the position. Applicants who have been selected as an alternate may be called up to fill any open spots on the staff as soon as one is available, right up until training begins in June.

  • Orientation Team Leader

  • The Orientation Team Leaders provide administrative and social support to the Orientation Program. This is a great leadership opportunity for returning OLs who wish to gain experience in mentoring and supporting their peers while enhancing their professional and leadership skills.

    Tasks may include: 

    • Coordinate rooming necessities before OL move-in.
    • Plan one social outing for their team during Orientation training.
    • Act as a resource for both new and returning OLs, checking in each day for understanding, questions, and concerns.

    Requirements

    • Must have previously served as an Orientation Leader at WSU.
    • Must have a GPA of a 2.5 or higher.
    • Must be available to move in early to assist with training preparation.

  • Returning Orientation Leader applications are due February 6.

  • Step 1 | Orientation Leader Individual Interviews

    February 9th - 17th in the Office of Student Involvement and Leadership Development
