Traffic Collisions at Intersections are a Significant Strain on Modesto’s Emergency Resources

    PROBLEM SUMMARY

How might we reduce the amount of traffic collisions at the intersections in the regions that have the highest frequency of collisions? Each collision requires a response from multiple organizations. Law enforcement is required to divert manpower from other duties to direct traffic, write reports, and maintain public safety in these situations. Emergency services are also required to respond, some of which are tax-payer supported.

Modesto Community Food Inequality and Insecurities

    PROBLEM SUMMARY

Large quantities of people facing low income and homelessness in the area struggle with food insecurities. These demographics of people affected have an unequal opportunity to purchase nutritional food. There is also usually not a large variety of foods for people with food allergies and limitations, so many often go without, even when food programs are available. Food pantries do pop up within the community, but often not enough to sustain a person for an entire week, and many food programs lack advertising, so they do not always reach people who need it.

Negative Affects of Lack of Funding

    PROBLEM SUMMARY

This problem does disturb the community because the lack of funding leads to unattended youth which leads to more serious issues affecting the community such as violence, destruction of property, gang involvement, and more. These issues become a community problem because to alleviate and repair damages the resident's tax dollars are being used, funds that could have been better spent.

    California Droughts

    PROBLEM SUMMARY

One of the most significant concerns that mankind is now confronted with is climate change. Both the climatic conditions on the surface of the planet and the chemical composition of the atmosphere have been changed as a direct consequence of human activity. This has resulted in a rise in temperatures that are considered to be worldwide averages as well as increasing sea levels, both of which are having a substantial impact on the climate. These shifts have had a significant negative impact on a great number of nations, and as a direct consequence, natural catastrophes have driven millions of people from their homes. As a result, it is essential that we start taking action right once in order to stop the further development of this problem.

Republicans and Democrats - Why can't they get along?

    PROBLEM SUMMARY

Most levels of government from local to national have the same point of contention: party lines. This is to be expected in a two-party system (or even a multi-party system), however the contention far exceeds the bounds of government processes. Many people predicate their entire social lives on their politics, being so closed-minded that they wouldn’t even consider friendships with holders of differing political standings. Whether it’s on social media, on university campuses, or even on the street, political statements often meet opposing arguments - and these disputes can quickly turn from political debate to levying personal attacks against one another.

Students and Teachers Suffering Due to Classroom Size

    PROBLEM SUMMARY

In the United States, classroom sizes range from 20-30 children in an average public school. In California, Average class size for teachers in departmentalized instruction is 31.1 students. Through research and analysis, over 87% of people who we surveyed believe that classrooms are too large which, in turn, they also believe this impacts a child's education. Children are not getting the adequate attention they need, which results in lower test scores, grades, and dysfunction amongst the classroom and school body.

    Youth Isolation and Interpersonal Skills

    PROBLEM SUMMARY

Students in local schools do not feel safe at school. Every day, students face various threats to their safety, such as campus and relationship violence, bullying, drug abuse, gang affiliation, on top of home and financial problems. Students have a lot on their plate, and yet cannot even feel safe turning to teachers, due to incidents of sexual predation and inappropriate relationships.

Many students feel stressed, overwhelmed, and struggle to cope with what is going on around them. In turn, they are more likely to fall behind in class, suffer from mental health issues and low self esteem, struggle with maintaining healthy relationships, etc. due to the lack of feelings of security. Students do not possess the tools to navigate everything they face daily, and in turn do not continue their education, turn to substance abuse, and fall victim to unhealthy relationships and unsafe situations.

Well being of individuals in agriculture

    PROBLEM SUMMARY

The Central Valley is highly known for its intense agricultural settings. Finding orchards, farms, and other agriculture operations in our area don't take long. Working in agriculture is an intense, high-demand job that forces individuals to work around the clock all year long. The silent issue of the mental and physical health of these individuals is often overlooked due to the high demand for meeting the needs of the industry.

    Education Readiness

    PROBLEM SUMMARY

There seems to be a major issue with students being ready educationally to go to college. In almost all aspects, Stanislaus County has lower percentage scores in comparison to the average calculated in California as a whole. The real question here is, are the schools before college preparing the students correctly or are the colleges expecting too much before a student enrolls?
