Florida Contractor Licensing Law
HB 735, passed in 2021, goes into effect on July 1, 2023. The law was intended to streamline licensing in the state of Florida to make it easier for contractors who perform work in multiple jurisdictions. The law prohibits Florida counties from issuing their own contractor licenses for trades which are not regulated at the state level. Garage door contractors will be required to obtain a General Contractor or Residential Contractor license from the State. This state license is also required for contractors wishing to participate in the My Safe Florida Home grant program for impact-rated products including garage doors. IDA has heard from some members who are not happy with this change in licensing requirements. We have also learned that other stakeholders interested in construction licensing in Florida will be looking to amend the provisions adopted as a result of HB 735 through legislation or through rulemaking by the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR); IDA’s leadership is considering what action (if any) we should take on behalf of the garage door industry in Florida. IDA wants to hear from you. Your response to this poll will help guide or response.
