Paid Chimayo Weaving Apprenticeship
All skill levels and educational backgrounds welcome.
During this paid apprenticeship sponsored by Ariat, you will learn how to do production weaving on Spanish Floor Looms in order to work long-term for a Chimayo weaving gallery. Once you’ve completed training, you’ll get to choose between Trujillo’s Weaving Shop, Ortega’s Weaving Shop, or Centinela Traditional Arts to weave for.
After completion of the apprenticeship program, your hours will be flexible (how many hours a week you want to work and when) and you'll have the option to work from home. The job entails weaving 5X5”, 10X10”, and 10X15” weavings, and may expand to other sizes depending on
what the galleries need. You will be paid hourly for the three weeks of classes, but will be compensated by the piece after proving ability.
Note that this style of weaving will have you on your feet while working, which can be physically taxing. You’ll be working with real wool as well. All materials will be provided, but you will be responsible for making it to the classes that will be held at the New Mexico Fiber Arts Center in Espanola Due to the teacher and some of the gallery owners being high-risk, being vaccinated against Covid-19 is preferred, masks are currently required at the center.
Please Note: The first round of the Chimayo Weaving Apprenticeship has been completed. This program will be repeated, but no dates have yet been determined. We hope to run a second round of this apprenticeship program in the summer of 2024. Applicants of the program will be notified when dates of the second round of this program are set.
