Reading Buddies (Big Buddies)

Reading Buddies - Winter 2023

- February 1 to March 22, 2023
- 3:30pm – 4:30pm
- Grades 6 to 10
Reading Buddies pairs students from grades 2-5 who are looking to practice and improve their reading skills with a ‘big buddy’ teen volunteer. Big Buddies are role models who are interested in working with younger children and helping them develop a love of reading and learning.

This program takes place at Lake Trail Community School. It includes a training component for Big Buddies and ongoing support from the facilitator during the program. All Big Buddies are eligible for an honoraria for participating.

Note: Big Buddies who are new to the program will have a short interview prior to starting. We will contact you to set up a time that works for the student. February 1 will be a training session for Big Buddies.

Facilitated by Daina van Rijt. Daina is the Family Literacy Coordinator with Comox Valley Lifelong Learning Centre.

Participant Safety

If a student does not attend a session, LTCES will phone or email to let the parent / guardian know. Please let us know if the student will no longer be attending the program so we can update our files.
If the participant is absent, LTCES can:*

At the end of each session:*

The student can leave on their own. They will be picked up or make their own way home. LTCES is not responsible for the student after the session ends.The student must stay with the facilitator at the end of the session. Pick-up location will be confirmed by email before the program starts.
If a session is cancelled at short notice due to facilitator illness, weather, etc...*

The student can leave and make their own way home or fill in the time as they wish. LTCES is not responsible for my child if a session is cancelled at short notice.The student cannot leave on their own. Please find an alternate activity until the usual end time.
