  • 2025 Judging Options

  • For 2025, we have three options for judging:

    OPTION 1: Judge BOTH Contests

    We hope you will be able to judge a heat of historical papers in February and join us in person to judge at the state contest in May. 

    OPTION 2:  NHD-CA State Contest ONLY - In Person Contest

    May 2nd - 3rd at Sacramento State University
    250 judges needed for student interviews & project evaluation.

    There are multiple days and sessions for judging at the NHD-CA state Contest. You can select the ones that work for your schedule:

    Friday, May 2nd
    Friday Judge Orientation 8:00 AM - 9:00 AM
    Morning Session 9:00 AM - 1:30 PM
    Afternoon Session 1:30 PM - 6:30 PM
    Evening Session 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

    Saturday, May 3rd
    Saturday Judge Orientation 8:00 AM - 9:00
    Morning Session 9:00 AM - 1:30 PM
    Afternoon Session 1:30 PM - 6:30 PM
    Evening Session 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

    OPTION 3:  Historical Paper Contest ONLY - Virtual Online Contest

    Preliminary Judging online between February 20th - March 6th
    Final Round Judging online between March 13th - 20th
    You will read, judge, and rank 8-10 papers
    No student interviews
    125 Judges are needed

  • By completing this form, you are commiting to participating and agree with the expectations of bing a History Day Judge. 



  • CONFLICT OF INTEREST

    In general, people affiliated with History Day students or schools are still allowed to serve as judges. The History Day staff will assign judges with conflicts to different categories/divisions.

    • Please let us know ALL categories you would be willing to judge. We will do our best to honor your preferences, but please note that you may be asked to judge something else, depending on participation numbers. We appreciate your flexibility.
