  • We need help judging the Online Historical Paper and Virtual contests in February.

    We also need help judging the NHD-CA State Contest, taking place May 1–2, 2026, at Sacramento State.

  • By completing this form, you are commiting to participating and agree with the expectations of bing a History Day Judge. 


  • CONFLICT OF INTEREST

    In general, people affiliated with History Day students or schools are still allowed to serve as judges. The History Day staff will assign judges with conflicts to different categories/divisions.

  • Judging Options

  • For 2026, we have three options for judging:

    OPTION 1: Judge BOTH Online and State Contests

    We hope you will be able to judge for our online contests in February (Historical Paper Contest or Virtual Schools Contest) AND join us in person to judge at the State Contest in May. 

    OPTION 2:  NHD-CA State Contest ONLY - In Person Contest

    May 1st - 2nd at Sacramento State University
    250 judges needed for student interviews & project evaluation.

    There are multiple days and sessions for judging at the NHD-CA state Contest. You can select the ones that work for your schedule:

    Friday, May 1st
    Friday Judge Orientation 8:00 AM - 9:00 AM
    Morning Session 9:00 AM - 1:30 PM
    Afternoon Session 1:30 PM - 6:30 PM
    Evening Session 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

    Saturday, May 2nd
    Saturday Judge Orientation 8:00 AM - 9:00
    Morning Session 9:00 AM - 1:30 PM
    Afternoon Session 1:30 PM - 6:30 PM
    Evening Session 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

    OPTION 3:  Online Contests (Historical Papers and Virtual Schools) 

    Preliminary Judging online between February 20th - March 6th
    Final Round Judging online between March 13th - 20th
    No student interviews
    125 Judges are needed
