Seaplane Pilots Association (SPA) is proud to announce another scholarship in keeping with our primary advocacy mission. The Women Making a Splash 2023 Seaplane Add-On Rating Scholarship is designed to encourage more women pilots to experience the joy of water flying!
SPA protects and promotes water flying, representing the interests of seaplane enthusiasts on a variety of levels to create a positive environment for seaplane flying and ownership. Our goal is to provide scholarships to select women who will enthusiastically pay it forward with a “Passion Put into Action” attitude to help grow our organzation's community. The successful candidate will inspire other women to get out on the water and see what flying seaplanes is all about!
Three great seaplane schools have generously partnered with SPA to provide these scholarships. Designated Examiner check-ride fees will be provided by SPA. All applicants must be a member of the Seaplane Pilots Association.
A written travel plan is required to be submitted for each location to ensure candidates have carefully considered their logistics, travel time and expense requirements for these destination ratings.
SCHOLARSHIPS
Alaska Floats & Skis @AK8 in Talkeetna, Alaska is offering up to 10 hours for a 5-day, ASES add-on rating package inclusive of lodging, ground instruction, flight training and checkride aircraft. Training will be in Piper Pacers on straight floats. Transportation to and from Alaska is not included. Bus, train, TURO, and car rental from Anchorage (or Fairbanks) are options to get to Talkeetna and are the responsibility of the winner. Bike rentals are also available. Scheduling must be coordinated with Alaska Floats & Skis @AK8, and training must be completed by September 20, 2023 due to seasonal considerations. https://www.alaskafloats.com/courses.php
Kenmore Air in Kenmore, Washington is offering a 10-hour ASES rating inclusive of ground instruction, flight training, and checkride aircraft. Training will be conducted in a Piper Supercub or Cessna 172 on straight floats. Lodging and transportation to and from Kenmore Air are not ncluded. Cubs Floats and Fun in Pineville, Louisiana is offering a 5-hour ASES rating inclusive of ground instruction, flight training, and checkride aircraft. Training will be conducted in a Piper Supercub on straight floats. Lodging and transportation to and from Cubs Floats and Fun are not included. The Women Making a Splash scholarships are open to all U.S. Citizen female pilots holding an ASEL Private or higher-level certificate.
INSTRUCTIONS
The scholarship is seeking applications from U.S. Citizen women who hold a single engine airplane private pilot certificate or higher.
You will need to upload the following documents as part of your application:
Membership in the Seaplane Pilots Association. *Important* Please provide a copy of your membership card if you have it. If you do not have a card, the independant Scholarship Review Committee will cross-reference your member number in the SPA data base. Please make sure your membership number is accurate or your application may be disqualified.

Copy of current medical and aviation certificates.
Essay: 1,000 words max or less.
-Our goal in providing this scholarship is to increase the number of women seaplane pilots not by just one, but by many. Please tell us how you intend to create a ripple effect from your award; outline your plan to engage, inspire and influence other women pilots to obtain their seaplane ratings; tell us why you believe your plan will work.
-Please also describe how you plan to support the SPA mission; what you feel uniquely qualifies you for this scholarship; why you would like an ASES rating; how this rating will help you pursue future aspirations; any previous seaplane experience; your current flying and aviation-related activities in which you participate; any other information you feel is relevant. Committment and dedication to following through with your plan after completing your rating is a factor considered by the review committee.
Travel and Training Plan – Please briefly outline your ability and timeline to travel to each facility and to complete your training during the 2023 float season. Alaska training must be completed prior to September 20, 2023.
The application period will be open until 100 applications are received, or until midnight EST January 29, 2023, whichever occurs first. The scholarship review committee reserves the right to extend the application period if 100 applications aren't recieved by midnight EST January 29, 2023.
The scholarship winners will be notified on or before March 17, 2023. Winners will be announced at Sun 'N Fun Aerospace Expo 2023.
