Dallas Association of Young Lawyers
2023 Judicial Internship Application
Application Deadline February 28, 2023
The Dallas Association of Young Lawyers ("DAYL") invites first and second-year law students to apply for DAYL's Summer Judicial Internship Program ("Program"). Judges from Dallas-area civil, criminal, federal, probate, family, and appellate courts will be participating.
PURPOSE: The purpose of the Program is to provide law students with invaluable behind-the-scenes experience working with the judiciary. A second, but equally important, purpose is to provide local Judges with research support. DAYL promotes diversity and it encourages applications from all law students, including law students who, because of their background, race, ethnicity, age, sexual orientation, gender, disability, or socioeconomic status, are traditionally underrepresented in the legal profession.
REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must have completed first-year civil procedure and legal writing courses before June 2023. Courses in evidence and criminal or appellate procedure are helpful but not required. Internship selections will be made by the participating judges. Applicants must be willing to commit to a six-week, full-time voluntary internship during the summer months and are expected to honor any commitments made to the judges. The internship is unpaid, and individual schedules will be determined by the judges.
Students selected to participate in the Program must attend a mandatory orientation presented by participating judges. It may be held virtually and details will be provided at a later date.
To be considered for placement in the Program, applicants should submit the following materials:
1. A completed Application (located on page 2);
2. A one-page statement of interest; and
3. A one-page resume.
COST: This program is free for law student members of the DAYL. The non-member fee is $15 and can be paid below. Non members are strongly encouraged to join DAYL to not only remove the Program application fee, but to also learn about other opportunities within the organizations. The law student membership fee is $25 for the year or $50 for the entire time you are in law school. DAYL membership information can be found
here.
GENERAL INFORMATION:
The Program is an unpaid, volunteer position. The participating judges select the interns and will be responsible for coordinating any interviews, if applicable, and a work schedule. Interns shall maintain the highest level of integrity and ethical conduct while interning for a judge. Law students who apply to the program should always respond to a judge if contacted for a position. Should the law student not be available for an internship due to having accepted another position or due to another reason, a response to the judge declining the opportunity is required.
COVID-19: Please note that some judges may prefer a virtual internship because of COVID-19, while other judges will prefer an in-person internship because of their docket. The decision to meet virtually or in person will be mutually agreed upon by the judicial intern and the judge. The Dallas Association of Young Lawyers encourages safety as a number one priority and advises that no law student particpant of the Program should accept an in-person internship if they are uncomfortable or unable to do so and they should be up front with the judge at the beginning of the process.
STIPEND INFORMATION: To defray some cost of interning through the Program, the DAYL has made available up to four (4) $500 stipends that will be awarded to uniquely qualified law students who demonstrate a financial need or hardship. These stipends are intended to encourage participation in the Judicial Internship Program by candidates with diverse perspectives who would have difficulty participating without financial assistance.
