2023 Scholarship Application Packet

Dear Applicant:

Imperial County Farm Bureau is proud to offer scholarships to residents of Imperial County who have chosen a field of study that supports their goal of an agriculture-related career. Farm Bureau administers several scholarship funds from a number of sources, including the Imperial County Farm Bureau Scholarship (funded with proceeds from the annual Farm Bureau Scholarship BBQ) as well as the Al Kain Scholarship, Matt LaBrucherie Memorial Scholarship, Raul Rodriguez Memorial Scholarship, Jack and Pauline McConnell Memorial Scholarship, Jack Strobel Scholarship, and Vern Highley Memorial Scholarship (all funded with private donations).

The scholarships will be awarded to full-time (12 units or more) college students. High school seniors who will be attending college full-time in the fall, and current college students who will be continuing their studies full-time in the fall are encouraged to apply. The scholarship award will be a minimum of $250 and a maximum of $3,000. All recipients are eligible to apply for the scholarship the following year, provided they continue to meet the criteria for applying. The criteria for awarding the scholarships are based on a grading system that includes the following:

A. Scholastic Performance (minimum of 2.50 GPA to apply)  25%

1. GPA

Note: For purposes of grading, college GPAs will be adjusted upward by 15%. This is done to equalize the difference in the difficulty of college courses when compared to high school curriculum.

2. Scholastic Achievements

Other scholarships received, CSF membership, or other academic recognition (excluding honor roll and dean's list)

B. Extra-Curricular, Leadership & Community Involvement  25%

1. Extra-Curricular, Athletic, & Community Activities 

2. Leadership

Offices held in organizations, religious or service groups, appointments to advisory positions, etc. 

3. Work Experience relating to Agriculture 

C. Finacial   25%

1. Annual Family Income 

2. Farm Bureau Membership 

D. Written Expression (Please see Application for essay details) 25%

5 p.m. Friday, April 7, 2023

Letters of Recommendation can either be included with your application or forwarded directly to Farm Bureau prior to the application deadline via mail or email.

Please note that Scholarship Committee members' children are ineligible to apply for the scholarship during the year(s) their parents serve on the committee.

Farm Bureau Scholarship Application

Please review the following carefully, and ensure you have completed and submitted all portions of the application prior to the deadline of April 7, 2023:

1. Write and submit a personal essay, which shall be no more than two pages (12-point type, double-spaced It will be judged for innovation, completeness, and display of temperament as well as the basics of grammar and syntax. The following questions are to be addressed in any order in your essay, but you may include any additional information you deem appropriate. A. Why do you believe you are a good candidate for this scholarship? B. How will this scholarship fit in with your financial plan for college? C. What do you believe will be your biggest challenge during college? D. What is your major and why did you choose this course of study? E. How do you intend to utilize your education after completing college? F. Which of your achievements are you most proud of? G. Where would you like to be five years after college education?

 2. Submit your current official transcript.

3. Submit a recent photograph suitable for publication. (A news article may be submitted by Farm Bureau to the local media and included in the Farm Bureau newsletter announcing recipients of the scholarship and will be accompanied by these photos.) By signing the application below. you are granting Imperial County Farm Bureau permission to use your photo and information in any way it deems fitting to announce the scholarship recipients to the public and media, and to promote and advertise the scholarship program. (Your financial information will always be handled confidentially and will never be shared)

4. Submit a minimum of two letters of recommendation Ask the letter writers to submit their letters directly to Farm Bureau prior to the application deadline or include the letters with your scholarship application. It is your responsibility to coordinate with the letter writers.
