James River Leadership Expeditions Teacher Application

The James River Association is looking for a teacher to join the James River Leadership Expeditions during their Session 1 experience on the James.

The James River Association education staff will provide expert instruction on paddling and camping skills, teambuilding, wildlife identification, water quality monitoring, history, river ecology, and policy. This teacher position will assist in the educational and logistical aspects of the journey.

The safety of the trip participants is the priority; staff with training in canoe instruction, Wilderness First Responder, and CPR will always be present with the team.

Teachers that commit to the 5-day leadership expedition will receive a $500 stipend.

An important part of the commitment you will make is to work with JRA staff to assist leading one of three successful five-day Expeditions for students from throughout the watershed. How would your teaching style contribute to a positive experience for a diverse group of students?*

What strengths as an educator, leader, and collaborator would you bring to Leadership Expedition?

The Leadership Expedition will involve moderately strenuous activity, including paddling canoes, portaging gear, sleeping outside in tents each night, and dealing positively with discomforts such as bugs and rain. Please describe your experience with the challenges of the outdoors.

The Leadership Expedition will require you to be away from home for one 5-day long trip, as well as pre-trip meetings with students & educators. Will you be able to fully commit to participation in this program by May 2023? Do you have any significant concerns for participating in the James River Expeditions?*
