About the Australian Shepherd 

We love Aussies, they have characteristics and requirements that some may find difficult to manage.  This breed is highly intelligent, loyal, and thrives on human companionship. Please watch the video above to familiarize yourself with the breed.

We will never dock tails. Research has shown that tails are crucial for communication, and balance and are an integral part of our breeding program. As such, we take a firm stand to keep all tails natural.  This extends to not breeding any pairs with the natural bobtail gene as well. We also do not remove dew claws for similar reasons. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to ask.

We understand circumstances may change.

Aussies are a breed that requires at least 1-2 hours of daily physical and mental stimulation. Aussies also need a job and frequent contact with people. They are not a breed that is content to be kenneled for 7-8+ hours a day.

Completing this application is a step in the process to acquiring a puppy but it does not guarantee you will get a puppy from this or any future litter. While it's unlikely, we do reserve the right to refuse any placement at any time for any reason.

APPROVAL AND DEPOSIT: We will review your application within 2 business days of receipt. Applications are processed in the order they are received. If your home is a good fit, we will notify you. Approved applications will be kept on file and will be notified when a litter is born.  Total cost of a puppy is currently $1900 (if this price ever changes then we will notify applicants prior to any deposit). We do not accept down payments until puppies are born and we know the gender and colors that are available.  The non-refundable deposit of $300.00 will be due immediately and the puppy will be reserved upon receipt of the down payment. The remaining $1600 is due in cash on the day of pick-up (when puppies are 8 weeks of age).

GOING HOME: We cannot hold puppies for extended times; it is critical for their social development that the litter departs within a reasonable time frame. If you have a big vacation planned or have events that would conflict with a young puppy, please know puppies cannot be boarded in a kennel until they have received their full immunizations and their rabies vaccination, which cannot be done until 3 months of age.  We can hold your puppy for a reasonable amount of time past the pick-up date but arrangments for the final payment must be made by 8 weeks of age and there will be an additional $20 boarding fee per day that the puppy is boarded past 8 weeks of age.

CONTRACT: We have a contract and will not place a puppy without a signed contract. We believe it's the professional thing to do to memorialize our obligations to each other on paper so there are no questions later. If you have questions about specific terms, you need to contact us prior to picking up your puppy. A copy of the contract is availble at any time upon request and also posted on our Puppy page at www.MilkyWayAussies.com.

SPAY/NEUTER: We require you to spay/neuter your puppy between 12-18 months of age; However if you are purchasing a puppy in the hopes of breeding then breeding rights can be discussed for an additional fee. Breeding is a very delicate process and we require breeding dogs have genetic testing done prior to breeding.  If you decide to go down that route we will be with you every step of the way.

REGISTRATION PAPERS: Some of our pups do come with AKC or ASDR registration papers. These papers are proof of the authenticity of your pup’s breed as an Australian Shepherd. If you are interested in registering your puppy then we can register the litter and it would be up to you to register your puppy in your name.  Please let us know up front if this is something you will need. We do not automatically register a litter unless it is requested.
