Thank you for your interest in Youth Leadership Polk!

Youth Leadership Polk is a dynamic learning experience designed to support the development of essential leadership skills. Class members are immersed in a curriculum that exposes them to a broad range of perspectives through experiential learning. Community leaders, business professionals, elected officials, and educators from across Polk County, engage in varied and robust career conversations that better inform students about planning for their future. This program is free of cost. This program is intended for students who will be a junior or senior in high school during the 2023-2024 school year.

Orientation:

Orientation will be held on Thursday, June 1st 2023 from 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm.

Experiential Program Week:

The Experiential Program Week will be held from Monday, June 5th 2023 through Friday, June 9th 2023. Each day is from 8:30am - 5:00 pm.

Softskills Lesson Dates:

The program will host mandatory softskills lessons on the following dates:

October 27, 2023

November 17, 2023

January 12, 2024

Job Shadowing:

Students participating in the program will interview with their job shadow placement during the January meeting and will complete a Job Shadowing experience in February 2024. The date selected for this February job shadow will be based on the availability of the employers that host our students.

Capstone Project Presentations and Essays:

Throughout the entire program, students will work to complete a Capstone Project Presentation and Essay, highlighting their experiences within the program (i.e. experiential week, softskills lessons, career exploration through job shadowing). We recommend that after each day, students reflect and add ideas to their presentations so that this does not become a huge undertaking right at the end of the program. These projects will be presented to a panel of judges and a secret panel will evaluate the essays. The scores from the essays and presentations will be averaged to award our highest scoring candidate(s) with a scholarship. The number of scholarships available varies each year.

Graduation:

Graduation will be held on April 16, 2024.
