The undersigned umpire has been informed and understands that Little League Insurance is provided for volunteer umpires who work without pay, and that umpires who receive compensation for their work are not covered under that insurance. GLLL works with both volunteer umpires and umpires who work for pay as independent contractors. The undersigned umpire, by placing his or her initials in the appropriate space below, and signing this form has elected to act as either a volunteer umpire with secondary Little League volunteer insurance coverage or as a paid independent contractor, in which event no insurance is provided by the GLLL or Little League. A parent or guardian’s signature and initials are also required if under age 18. Also, the state of Michigan specifically excludes umpires and referees from Workman Compensation claims.
Employment Status: GLLL will treat paid umpires as independent contractors and not employees of the league. With regard to pay, the league will not withhold any Federal, State, Social Security or Medicare deductions. It is the responsibility of the independent contractor to file the appropriate earnings forms with the State of Michigan and the Internal Revenue Service. GLLL does not provide accident
insurance for paid umpires.
Payment Structure: Timecards are collected on Sunday night and paydays will be on Thursdays after 6pm. Pay is $25 for plate umpire and $20 for base umpire for Minor or Major Division games. Pay is $30 for plate umpire and $25 for base umpire for Intermediate Division games. Pay is $30 for plate umpire and $25 for base umpire for Junior Division baseball games (held on field 7). A $5 late fee will be deducted for umpires arriving late to their scheduled games.
Game Scheduling and Verification: All games will be scheduled through our Chief Umpire, VP of Baseball or VP of Softball. Umpires can sign up for games and view the schedule through a sharred Google sheet. All umpires must notify the UIC if they are canceling or changing games after Sunday night of the same week they are scheduled for. Umpires must report to the assigned fields dressed and ready for the pregame meeting a minimum of 15 minutes before game time (Games begin at 6:00 PM).
