Filing Deadlines & Extensions
The filing deadline for a return depends upon the type of entity that is filing. Regardless of which kind of entity is filing, all extensions must be filed with IRS, states and cities by the original due date of the return.
Filing Deadline for Most Partnerships and S Corporations
Most partnerships and S corporations have a March 16 deadline for 2026. Extensions must be filed by the original due date of the return, which is usually March 15. The extended due date for partnership and S corporation tax returns is September 15.
An extension of time to file does not give you more time to pay your tax. If you believe you will owe money when you file, you should include the amount you think you will owe with your extension. You can pay what you owe with your extension in any of the following ways:
- Direct debit of your bank account
- Mailing a check
- Via the IRS and/or state website payment pages
