This webinar provides a general introduction to mental health in Australia, covering the extent and impact of mental health problems and disorders on individuals, families and the community. The webinar will include an outline of key mental health issues and priorities and policy and practice responses to these. Particular focus will be given to the lived experience of mental ill-health and the impact of stigma and discrimination on help-seeking behaviours among those living with mental ill-health.
The online format will include opportunities for discussion and ask questions regarding the content presented.
About the presenter
Mike retired as Professor of Mental Health Nursing at the University of Newcastle in early 2020, a position he had held since 2002. During his academic career Mike led nursing and midwifery schools in the University of Tasmania, Curtin University and the University of Newcastle. He has published over 100 peer reviewed articles, books, book chapter and abstracts and presented numerous keynote addresses and conference presentations in Australia and internationally. Mike is the president and chair of the Australian College of Mental Health Nurses. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Australian Borderline Personality Disorder Foundation. He is an accredited Master Mental health First Aid Instructor and has delivered almost 100 Mental Health First Aid courses.
