The mission of the Manasquan River Yacht Club Junior Sailing Program is to foster respect and appreciation of the water. Sailors learn seamanship, sailing, racing and participate in STEM projects. MRYC provides a fun, structured, safe environment that encourages independence and teamwork. MRYC Junior Sailors will learn to care for their equipment and each other. At the end of the season, sailors are more skilled, confident and independent children.

*****Our staff is skilled at placing children in a fleet that best fits their needs. If you are unsure which fleet to register for, don't worry. Register for the length of class you desire and one that fits your child based on age. We will make adjustments after assessment.

Your child will need to bring each day:

1. USCG approved life jacket

2. Closed toe water shoes

3. Sun protection- hat, sun screen

4. Lunch/snack

5. Towel

Junior Sailing Fleets

Introduction Fleet 4 Week
Introduction to sailing. This class is recommended for young first-time sailors. Child must be at least 7 by the start of program (6/24) Sailors learn basic water skills, boat rigging, skulling, knot tying and parts of the Optimist sailboat. Child will be involved in activities on and off the water. A boat is not required for sailors in the Intro fleet. M-F, 5 hours/day.

An extension of the 4 week program. Sailors will get more experience on the water. No boat required. M-F , 5 hours/day.

Beginner Fleet 4 Week
New sailors 8+, and sailors who have completed a season in the Introduction Fleet are recommended for the Beginner Fleet. Your child will need a boat for this fleet . Sailors will will continue to learn more advanced aspects of getting around a course. (Optis Available to rent from MRYC or you may provide your own Optimist Dinghy) Program runs M-F, 5 days/week.

Opti C- Mixed Fleet 4 Week
Sailors who have completed Introduction and Beginner may move up to Opti C- Mixed Fleet class.New sailors (9+) will be evaluated to be placed in this fleet. Sailors interested in racing will concentrate on skills, strategies and rules of regattas. Sailors not on the racing track will continue to build confidence and independence on the water. Boat required. Program runs 5 days a week M-F.

Opti C- Mixed Fleet 8 Week
Extension of the 4 week program, sailors in the Opti C- Mixed fleet participate in a weekly racing series and continue their growth as sailors. Boat required. Program runs 5 days a week M-F.

2 Week Introduction
MRYC offers a 2 week introduction class 6/24/2024-7/5/2024 no class on 7/4/2024. Boat included. Sailors will be working with an Opti trainer boat and learning basic sailing skills. More advanced sailors can also participate in the 2 week program and will be placed accordingly with sailors/sailboat of similar skill level. Program runs 5 hours day/ M-F for 2 weeks with 7/4 off.
