    STEM Internship Program
  • Are you an employer in the STEM industry hosting or recruiting summer interns? We have an exciting opportunity to make your internship package more robust by enrolling your interns in the Discover Frederick STEM Internship Program!

    The program is an effort to help our Frederick County businesses attract and retain the STEM talent they need. Hosted by Frederick County Office of Economic Development and Workforce Services and through the generous sponsorship of Visit Frederick, First United Bank and Trust, and Woodsboro Bank, the program brings our area’s STEM interns together to learn from each other, brush up on their professional skills, and learn about the many reasons why Frederick is a great place to live, work, and thrive!

    Program Elements

    Throughout the summer, interns enrolled in the program will participate in:

    • Professional Preparation Workshops equip students with professional skills to succeed at your workplace while providing space to learn from each others experiences and build community. Each workshop will be offered on location at one of our program sponsors’ facilities. Sign up to sponsor and give interns a tour of your facility!
      • Business Etiquette 101: Communication for businesses and navigating office politics
      • Local STEM Job Market & Resume Writing
      • Growing Your Network: Cultivating business relationships & how to develop your LinkedIn presence
      • Leadership Development: How to be intentional about your career path and develop your leadership skills
    • Experience Frederick Events give interns the opportunity to discover all that Frederick County has to offer. These events are hosted by Frederick County Workforce Services (FCWS), Frederick County Office of Economic Development (FCOED), and Visit Frederick
      • Downtown Frederick Tour & Welcome Orientation
      • Cunningham Falls State Park History Hike
      • End of Summer Networking Event (Open to all enrolled employers & interns)
    • Internship at your company this summer in a STEM-related position

    Program Enrollment Options

    Programming Only: FREE thanks to our sponsors!
    Already have an intern lined up? Equip your intern to succeed at your organization! The Programming Only option allows your intern to take advantage of the professional preparation workshops to help students transition from college to a work environment. Interns will explore Frederick County through sponsored events designed to showcase the area’s unique urban and rural landscapes. This option includes 1 ticket for your staff to meet and network with the interns at the End of Summer Networking Event.

    Enrollment Steps

    1. Complete the form below to indicate interest in enrolling your current or potential interns in the program. This will put a hold on the slots available.
    2. Once all the interns have been enrolled, we will send detailed information on the dates and times of the various events to both you and your interns. We will also start to collect RSVP's for the End of Summer Networking Event.

    Company Information
    • Interns - Programming Only 
    • Please provide contact information for the interns you wish to enroll in the programming only portion of the Discover Frederick STEM Internship Program.

    • Interns - Housing & Programming 
    • The information below will be used to list your positions on the colleges' online job board (Handshake). Students will apply through the application link that you provide below - we will not be screening or recruiting candidates for you. Once you have secured your candidate, simply email Mariel Fedde mfedde@frederickcountymd.gov  to confirm your enrollment in the Discover Frederick STEM Internship Program. Position information is due by March 31st. Enrollment fees will be due April 28th, 2023. If you have multiple internship positions, please fill and submit this form again for each position you'd like listed on college career centers' webpages. Please note: Employers can enroll 5 interns maximum.

    • Position Discription: You can simply copy and paste the description that is listed in your online application page, or create a new one. 

      Please note, we will add to all position descriptions information about the Discover Frederick STEM Internship Program.

    • Eligibility Requirements 
    • Employer Eligibility

      • Employers must be a company in a STEM field. STEM is defined as: Agricultural Sciences, Bioscience, Computer Sciences & Technology, Engineering, Health Sciences, Manufacturing Science, and other related Science, Technology, Engineering and Math – related industries.
      • Employers must be located within Frederick County
      • For employers in the housing program, employer agrees to host an intern from June 5th through August 11th, 2023 (10 weeks)


      Position Eligibility

      • Employers must submit an internship description for review and approval
      • Employers must have an identified staff member who serves as the intern’s supervisor and mentor
      • Employers must provide a physical work space in Frederick County
      • Employers must provide at minimum 20 hours of work per week for the entire 10 weeks

      Intern Eligibility

      • Interns must be a current college student at an accredited 2- or 4-year college or university, or a graduate within the last 12 months
      • For Housing Program: Intern's permanent residence must be outside of Frederick County, MD

      Terms and Conditions

      For emoloyers enrolling their intern in housing, the employer agrees to pay the program costs to enroll the intern in full by May 26th, 2023.

      • Program Enrollment & Housing: $3,150 / Intern

      Employers agree to allow interns a flexible schedule to accommodate the following professional development modules and group experiences. Interns agree to participate to the best of their abilities in the following group activities:

      • Welcome Orientation (Weekday Afternoon/Evening)
      • Lunch & Learn (2-hour)
      • Morning Tour & Workshop (2-hour)
      • Lunch & Learn (2-hour)
      • Cunningham Falls Outing (Friday, July 14th)
      • Morning Tour & Workshop (2-hour)
      • Closing Networking Event (Weekday Afternoon/Evening)
