    PROGRAM OBJECTIVES for Engineering Scholarships

    The Engineering Scholarships program supports the mission of the National Society of Black Engineers – Birmingham Professionals to increase the number of culturally responsible black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community by:

    • Stimulating and developing student interest in the various engineering disciplines
    • Encouraging and advising minority youth in their pursuit of an engineering career
    • Striving to increase the number of students that pursue engineering at the undergraduate and graduate levels
    • Promoting public awareness of engineering and the opportunities for minorities in that profession 
    • Candidates should consider these program objectives carefully before applying and be prepared to explain in their personal statements how their study plans would support the objectives.

    QUALIFICATIONS for Engineering Scholarships

    Qualified scholars must demonstrate professionalism, motivation, leadership, initiative, and personal achievement.  Scholars are expected to support program objectives by choosing a study in the field of engineering or related science that will help address the technical needs of the community.

    ELIGIBILITY:

    • Students must intend to enroll in an Engineering program accredited by ABET
    • Students must be a graduating high school senior entering at the college freshman level in the upcoming summer or fall term
    • Students must attend high schools within the greater Birmingham Metropolitan area
    • Students must be a citizen of the United States at the date of application

  • A personal statement is required of all applicants.

    Considering the mission of NSBE - BIRMINGHAM PROFESSIONALS, we are particularly interested in your motivation for selecting your chosen engineering major, how you would like to utilize your degree in a career, and how completing your engineering degree will enable you to serve your community.  Because we want to know you as well as possible through this application, you may also discuss your interests, achievements, goals, experiences, or anything else you may want us to know.

    Please use separate sheets of paper and attach.  (Statement should be typed, double-spaced, and between 300-400 words.) 

    Personal statements will be judged based on principles of grammar, punctuation, content, clarity, and appropriateness to topic.

  • Essay

  • All applicants should submit an essay detailing the role that engineering has in developing our world. You should describe atleast two challenges that your generation is facing. Create innovative solutions to address those challenges.

  • In submitting this application, I hereby certify that:

    • I am in need of this scholarship aid to continue my education.
    • I will use the proceeds of any scholarship aid received for the payment of tuition, required fees, board, room, required materials, or books.
    • The information submitted in this application is complete and correct, and I agree to inform the committee of changes in my financial circumstances.
    • I agree to abide by the rules established by the NSBE - BIRMINGHAM PROFESSIONALS Engineering Scholarship Committee and understand that all decisions rendered by the committee are final.

    TRANSCRIPTS

    Provide original transcripts from all secondary schools attended.

    TEST SCORES

    Provide copies of most current ACT/SAT scores.

    All documents above submitted by mail must be postmarked by Thursday, April 6th, 2023.

    Submission of documents can be done electronically in the fields below. For validation, Letters of Recommendation must include the name, title, and contact information of the author. Transcripts must include school letterhead/ensignia and contact of school administration representative. Items that cannot be verified as official via electronic submission will disqualify the applicant.
