Baptism is a sacrament of initiation, which brings a person into union with Christ as a member of the Catholic Church.
Godparents role: A Godparent represents the Catholic Church at Baptism and serves as a role model for the child living a full Christian life.
There may be two Godparents (one Godmother and one Godfather). One of these must be a baptized, practicing Catholic. The other may be a baptized, practicing member of another Christian denomination. While this person is referred to as a "Christian Witness", his/her role in the Baptism is the same as the godparent. Likewise, the expectation is that this Christian Witness be a Christian role model for this child. Christian Witnesses are required to complete this Christian Witness Eligibility Form.
In order to be eligible Godparents, you must meet the following requirements:
- currently practicing the Catholic faith
- at least 16 years of age
- a registered member of a Catholic parish
Completed the following sacraments in the Catholic Church
- Baptism
- First Communion
- Confirmation
- Married in the Catholic Church (if applicable)
