  • Welcome to the Sandy Community Campus Park Development Plan Online Survey #2!

The City of Sandy is developing a new community park in the heart of downtown. In this online survey, you can learn more about the project and share your thoughts and ideas on three possible park design concepts.

This online survey includes the following stations:

  • Project Overview

In 2016, the City of Sandy purchased the property now known as the Community Campus (formerly Cedar Ridge Middle School). Conversations are still ongoing about how to repurpose the old Cedar Ridge buildings for community use. Consideration of an aquatic facility or other community amenities will occur in a future phase.

To take advantage of available grant funds that are restricted to park development use, the City Council made the decision to move forward with refining previous design concepts to re-envision the lower field area as a community park.

The Sandy Community Campus Park will serve as a focal point and gathering place for all Sandy residents and include a wide range of park features.

The Community Campus Park site is approximately 10.5 acres of partially developed property, located behind the old Cedar Ridge Middle School on the north side of Pleasant Street, adjacent to the Sandy River Park.

  • To do this, we must first create a park design plan that:

    • Identifies a unique vision for the park that reflects Sandy’s values, heritage, and community needs.
    • Provides guidance on what types of features could be in the park (i.e., picnic shelters, playgrounds, etc.)
    • Includes a timeline and budget for developing the park.
  • What We've Heard So Far

  • Through the first open house and online survey, we’ve heard the following feedback.

    • People want to use the Community Campus Park to play and recreate.
    • Natural features, such as natural play areas, forested areas, and native plantings are preferred.
    • Most people plan to use a car to get there.
    • A new skate park and pump track were popular for many, including skate park features such as stair sets, ledges, and traditional or large bowls.
    • Preferred pump track features included elements such as a progressive jump line, prefabricated features and ridable art, beginner track and adaptive use track.
  • Graphic demonstrating data results from previous survey

    • Several people asked for specific amenities like an all-abilities inclusive park, walking paths, night lighting, covered spaces and a space for teenagers to recreate.
    • Several questions arose about other recreation facilities such as an aquatic center and sports complex.  These types of facilities are planned to be addressed as future funding becomes available. In addition, the Community Campus Park ‘green space’ will continue to be available for soccer and other youth sports.
  • Possible Park Design Concepts

  • Based on community feedback, we developed three possible park design concept alternatives and three possible skate park and pump track designs for consideration.
We want to find the right mix of features based upon your input on these design concepts. These concepts are not final and are intended to show what the park could look like. Review the following plan concepts below and let us know what you think!

Below are three possible options to consider for the overall park design.

  • The Meander

The park design for the Meander option recalls the fluid forms of the Sandy River and surrounding hillsides. The curving paths with woodland plantings bring visitors from the main entry on Meinig Avenue to a central plaza and then descends into an open grass area. Vehicular access to the parking lot is from both Meinig Avenue and Scenic Street with a vehicular drop-off adjacent to the central plaza. The plaza hosts a shelter, a restroom facility, picnic tables and benches, all with views to the forest beyond. From the plaza, there is a connection to a winding walk that connects to other park elements including a play area nestled in the wooded hillside, a skate park at the bottom of a sloped grass seating area and a pump track. Fronting the walkways is a large open grass area along with an additional shelter, benches, and planting.

  • The Plateau

The park design for The Plateau option includes a central plaza located on a small bluff overlooking the park below. The plaza space includes a combination shelter/restroom, an overlook, seating, a small Pioneer Garden and a play area. The main vehicular and pedestrian entry to the park is from Meinig Avenue with pedestrian access from both Meinig Avenue and Scenic Street. The park pathways lead down to the lower open space with the skate park and pump track tucked into the base of the existing wooded hillside. A bike trail winds through the upper forest, connecting to the skate park and the pump track. Benches and picnic tables are located along the pedestrian paths and the walkway connects to the future path that will connect to Sandy River Park.

  • The Meadow

The park design for the Meadow option includes a large central open space that is flanked by a play area, a shelter, a forest garden, and the pump track. With this design, the primary vehicular access is from Scenic Street with pedestrian access from both Scenic Street and Meinig Avenue. The plaza spaces in the Meadow option are spread throughout the site and include a smaller entry plaza at the parking lot, a skateboard plaza near Meinig Avenue and a lower plaza at the play area. The pathway system provides easy access to all the park’s amenities including the upper skate park, the pump track that is nestled into the lower hillside, the play area and the future trail that will connect to the Sandy River Park. From the upper plaza, stairs and a fully accessible walkway through a forest garden bring visitors down to the large central open space.

  • Next Steps & How to Stay Involved

  • Thank you for participating in the second online survey for the Community Campus Park!

Your feedback will help us refine the community park design. In March, we’ll share a preferred design concept with you to ensure we are designing a park that is uniquely yours.

We are currently in the programming and design phase, and we anticipate submitting the initial, preferred design concept for grant funding in early April. Additional planning, design, and permitting will continue through early 2024. Construction is estimated to begin in 2024 and finish in 2025.
