TDA recognizes that in any given school year, unanticipated weather events or other disasters may necessitate the closure of schools, preventing the offering of curriculum during the temporary closure. Per regulation, schools are permitted to serve children via the Seamless Summer Option (SSO)(preferred) or the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) between the months of October and April if there is an unanticipated school closure. Note that for the school to be considered closed under this guidance, no instruction of any kind should be offered during he closure.
Additionally, for this school year only through April 30, USDA has issued waivers allowing area eligible schools to serve non-congregate meals via SSO or SFSP during a school closure, and allowing service at a closed school site location. Because TDA is required to report on the usage of this waiver, and to facilitate claiming and Administrative Reviews, TDA requests that any CE experienceing an unanticipated school closure in its district submit this notification form.
Note: All area eligibility requirements remain in effect. Sites not listed on the 2022-2023 School Data for Area Eligibility report (posted on SquareMeals and in TX-UNPS Download Forms), or not in the attendance zone of a listed school, are not eligible to operate a summer program during an unanticipated school closure.
