• Griffin Hall Membership Application for 2023

  • Griffin Hall is ANU's non-residential hall, with the aims of providing a community for off-campus students and creating opportunities for engagement with campus life. Griffin provides access to interhall sports, arts and social events as well as internal activities and wellbeing support for members.

    *****

This is the application form for Griffin Hall membership in 2023. The form asks for some personal information, which helps the Hall provide member services to you. If you do not consent to this use of your personal information, we may not be able to provide you with some of these benefits.

It may take up to a week for your membership to be processed. The University will then provide your name, u-number and any information you offer about your interests to student leaders in the Griffin Hall Members’ Association (GHMA) Committee, Griffin Hall Community Assistants (CAs), Griffin Hall Academic Mentors (AMs) and Griffin Hall Inward Bound (IB) Coaches. This enables these student leaders to confirm your entitlement to participate in Griffin Hall and interhall events, and to update you about events and activities you might like to participate in.

Griffin Hall, as part of ANU, is required to comply with the Australian Privacy Principles and ANU privacy policy when handling personal information. If you have any questions or complaints about ANU privacy practices please contact privacy@anu.edu.au.

In order to apply for Griffin Hall, you must:

    1. Be a current student at the Australian National University (unless applying for an Associate Resident Membership),
    2. Not be a member of any other residential hall, college or lodge.
  • Personal Information

  •  - -
  • Interhall Events

  • Griffin members are provided with the opportunity to participate in all activities and competitions run by the Interhall Committees of ANU, alongside all other residential halls on campus.

Information about individual events will be readily available as the year progresses, or feel free to ask your Leadership team.

The following questions help us to let you know about activities and events you might be interested in, by responding you are not committing to or prevented from participating in any events.

  • Interhall Sports

Griffin is a member of the Interhall Sports Organisation and competes in all ISO events with other residential halls. Sports offered range from large team events to individual/small team competitions, some held with games over several weeks and others over one or a few days. Most sports events will also have trainings facilitated by Griffin Sports Representatives and Griffin member coaches.

  • Interhall Arts

Griffin is a member of the Interhall Arts Committee and competes in all IAC events alongside other residential halls. Arts events range across a variety of creative areas and include both group and individual performances, submissions of individual works and team and individual competitive activities. Most arts events occur over one or a few days, a small number will involve group rehearsals over several weeks.

  • Inward Bound

Inward Bound (IB) is a unique, annual event run at ANU for over 50 years. The event is a competitive "adventure footrace" that involves a combination of orienteering and long-distance running. Students participate in teams navigating from maps and running cross-country over distances from approximately 30-100km in different divisions. ANU Halls including Griffin may enter a team of 4 in each of 7 divisions to compete on the day (usually in term 4).

Running IB requires extensive training throughout the year; this is facilitated with the support of a committed team of IB coaches.
No prior orienteering experience is required and runners of any initial skill level may freely attend trainings and be eligible for eventual selection for teams.

IB also offers many opportunities for involvement for non-runners socially and through volunteering with training and the annual event itself.

  • Griffin Hall and You!

  • In addition to interhall competitions, Griffin Hall provides a wide range of unique services for members.

    Social Events:

Griffin Hall organises a wide range of casual social events open to all members throughout the year, the majority of which are free to attend.

The main events of the social calendar are Commencement (a semi-formal welcome to the community held in term 1) and Valedictory (a formal dinner to celebrate the graduating class and the end of the year in term 4).

    Academic Support:

Griffin has a dedicated Academic Mentor (AM) team who are able to advise on matters related to academics and degree programs. The AMs run regular events throughout the year as well as being available for onoing support and assistance.

    Wellbeing Support:

Griffin has a highly trained team of Community Assistants (CAs) who are dedicated to supporting the wellbeing of Griffin members. CAs are ever-present friendly faces in the community and can provide advice and support on any issues relating to wellbeing including how to seek help regarding mental health concerns and all other topics related to Griffins' general welfare.

  • Griffin Hall Advocacy Sub Committee

  • Griffin Hall values inclusivity and acknowledges the diversity of backgrounds and experiences within our community. The hall has an Advocacy Sub Committee with the aim of giving a stronger voice to disadvantaged or minority groups among our members. The group endeavours to promote greater diversity and accessibility in Griffin and to ensure Griffin reflects and contributes to positive social change in the wider community.

This includes, but is not limited to, supporting:

    • Gender and Sexuality advocacy,
    • Ethnocultural, Black, Indigenous, and Persons of Colour (BIPOC) advocacy,
    • Disabilities advocacy and
    • accessibility for financially disadvantaged and low SES students.

The Sub Committee exists to empower members to provide opinions and recommendations on how Griffin runs to student leadership and staff, as well as to run their own projects, campaigns and events to benefit or support Griffin members who identify as part of marginalised groups.

Your answers will remain confidential to your 2023 Vice-President Freda and the Non-Residential Hall Coordinator Darren Hastie. Questions can be directed to: griffinhall.vp@anu.edu.au or griffinhall@anu.edu.au.
