    Brief Summary of Modern Slavery:

Modern slavery, or human trafficking, affects nearly 50 million people worldwide, with Asia as the epicenter of the problem, where 61% of the world's enslaved people live. Despite most countries outlawing slavery, modern slavery is a lucrative business, generating $124 billion yearly. It thrives off public ignorance, government inaction, and social vulnerability, such as poverty, displacement, drug addiction, incarceration, and war, allowing for the exploitation and enslavement of victims. Modern slavery takes many forms, and it can be subtle or difficult to recognize.

Two forms of modern slavery are forced labor and sex trafficking. Forced labor is a global issue. In the United States, 2/3 of the 1.2 million incarcerated people are prison laborers who are often mistreated, abused, and coerced into working for less than $1.00 (USD) an hour. In China, anti-government protestors risk imprisonment in brutal labor camps like Laogai. Sex trafficking is a form of modern slavery that targets women and children, using force, fraud, or coercion to induce them to sell sex. In Amsterdam's red-light district, investigations estimate that as high as 90% of prostitutes are trafficked. Another example is a boyfriend coercing his girlfriend into selling pornographic material online.

Despite the widespread and destructive impact of modern slavery, many governments and corporations turn a blind eye to these human rights violations, prioritizing profit over people.
