• English as a Second Language - Spring 2023

    Due Friday, March 17, 2023
    • Basic Info
    • Optional Demographic Info
    • Principal Investigator Info
    • Please be sure to tell your Principal Investigator (PI) about your plans to take this course. You may need to coordinate your schedule to be sure you can attend classes on time, once you know what day of the week your class will be.

      We encourage all PIs to be flexible to ensure postdocs are able to benefit from this course.

    • Past ESL Enrollment
    • Placement Testing
    • ALL applicants are REQUIRED to take the placement test, which will be given virtually.  Students  who do not complete the placement test will not be placed into a class. Info and scheduling will be arranged the week after applications close.

      We will try to accomodate as many participants as possible. Depending upon the number of people who complete the placement testing and space available in the class sections, some applicants may ultimately also not be placed into a class for the following reasons:

      1. They have taken the ORC's ESL course for two or more previous semesters;

      2. They had poor attendance in a previous semester;

      3. They score too high on the placement test and would not be appropriately served by the class; or

      4.  If there is a schedule conflict and they cannot take class on the evening with most people at their level.

    • Course Structure
    • Classes will start the week of March 27, 2023 and run for 12 classes, ending the week of June 12 / June 19 (allowing for possible cancellation).

      Classes will be held once per week by level, EITHER Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays from 5:30 - 8:30 PM, including a 15 minute break. Update: All classes will be held VIRTUALLY in 2023.

      Please check each night of the week that you are available to attend ESL class. Flexibility is encouraged as it will maximize our ability to place you into a class at the most appropriate level.

      Example:  If the majority of students who place into Level 1 are available on Tuesday nights, the Level 1 class will be scheduled for Tuesday.  If you then place into Level 1 but cannot attend on Tuesdays, you will not be able to participate in the class for this semester.
