Mr. Leslie F. House leaves a distinguished legacy defined by academic perseverance, military service, and a lifelong commitment to excellence. Born in Bumphus Mills, Tennessee, and educated at Crispus Attucks High School in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, he began his collegiate journey at Kentucky State University before answering the call to serve in the U.S. Army during World War II. After earning an honorable discharge, he resumed his studies at Tuskegee Institute (now Tuskegee University), where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture—reflecting his resilience and belief in the power of education. His dedication to service extended beyond the battlefield. Mr. House was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Reserves and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel, exemplifying leadership and discipline. He built a meaningful civil service career at the Army Finance Center and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, and also contributed 12 years to the Lawrence Township School System. Deeply rooted in faith and community, he served as a Deacon at St. John’s Missionary Baptist Church for over 50 years and was an active member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Iota Lambda Chapter, the Indianapolis Tuskegee Alumni Club, the NAACP, and the Indianapolis Black Alumni Chapter. His legacy continues through the Leslie House Scholarship, which has empowered countless students to pursue higher education and leadership opportunities. Established in his honor because of the values he embodied—excellence, integrity, service, and a commitment to uplifting others—the scholarship was created to advance those ideals. Today, its impact is reflected in the success of its recipients, who carry forward his vision by making meaningful contributions to their professions and communities.
