• Green Room Certification

On-campus and off-campus housing residents have the opportunity to achieve room certification! Wondering what this entails? If you're making environmentally conscious lifestyle choices, you can complete a brief survey to gain recognition for your efforts. This survey assesses your purchasing habits, food waste reduction practices, e-waste disposal, and energy + water conservation.

The certification quiz consists of 24 sustainability-related questions and can be completed in less than 15 minutes. After finishing the quiz, the Resident Sustainability Advisor (RSA) will review your score to determine your eligibility for Green Room Certification. Individuals with high scores can even win a prize!

If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to the RSA at rsa@humboldt.edu.

  • Which residence hall do you live in?*
  • What type of dorm room do you live in?*
  • Waste Reduction:

Residents looking to be "Green Room Certified" should be mindful of how they are disposing of their waste, as well as limiting the amount of waste they have.

  • Do you use re-usable containers when taking food or drinks to-go? (this can be: OZZI boxes, mason jars, bamboo utensils, etc.)*
  • Do you recycle? This includes glass, cans, paper, cardboard, and any plastic containers labeled 1-7*
  • Composting Across Campus

Composting plays a pivotal role in living sustainably because it diverts food scraps and other organic matter from the landfill stream.

  • Do you get food items from local and/or green certified? (visiting the farmer's market, North Coast Co-Op, Wildberries, etc.)*
  • Do you compost your food waste in a compost bin?*
  • Do you know that you can request a compost pail from the Resident Sustainability Advisor if you live in Cypress, Campus Apartments, or College Creek?*
  • E-Waste Habits

Properly disposing of E-waste is another important aspect of being "Green Room Certified." E-Waste should be properly sorted to ensure that toxins don't leak into our Earth.

  • Which of the following should you dispose into e-waste bins?*
  • Do you recycle your used electronics, batteries, ink cartridges, CDs, LEDS, into the e-waste bins on campus?*
  • Purchasing Habits

Purchasing or donating second-hand items leads to a more eco-friendly life by limiting the number of items or clothing that wind up in landfills each year!

  • Do you use reusable bags when shopping?*
  • Do you utilize the R.O.S.E house to give or receive FREE school supplies like pens, pencils, paper, etc? (Located in Nelson Hall West 216. Go to https://humboldt.edu/wrrap/rose to learn more.)*
  • Energy Efficiency & Conservation

Being mindful of your personal energy usage goes a long way in reducing excessive energy consumption in the residence halls.

  • Do you use energy efficient lamps in your living spaces?*
  • Do you unplug unnecessary appliances when not in use?*
  • Do you turn off the lights when you leave a room?*
  • If possible, do you turn the heat down or off when you leave the dorm?*
  • Do you keep the window closed when the heat is on in the room?*
  • Do you use cold-water wash settings for laundry?*
  • Water Conservation

Water is a precious natural resource and should be conserved, especially in living areas due to the high volume of students who use it on a daily basis.

  • Do you use quick wash settings for your laundry or dishwasher?*
  • Do you turn off the water while brushing teeth, washing face, or shaving?*
  • Do you regularly take showers under 5 minutes?*
  • Would you report any drippy faucets or leaks by submitting a work request or calling the Housing Office?*
  • Extra Credit

  • Do you volunteer with off-campus or on-campus organizations?
  • Do you utilize the JackPass Program (free bus rides with student ID) or carpool?
  • Which of the following can go into compost bins?
  • Where is CCAT located?
  • Certification

  • I attest I will be a champion for green living and will encourage my roommates to be green too*
  • Congratulations!

If you are seeing this message, it means that you have reached the minimum score to get Green Room Certified. The RSA will be in contact with you shortly to give you a prize as well as your certification!

  • Uh Oh!

If you are seeing this message, it means that you did not reach the minimum score to get Green Room Certified. That's ok! You can take the quiz again in the future after you have implemented simple and more sustainable lifestyle choices.

Here are some tips, so that you can get Green Room Certified:

    WASTE REDUCTION & RECYCLING
    1. COMPOST. There are compost collection bins located around campus. Collect food scraps in your kitchen and empty that container into a campus compost bin. You can also request a countertop compost bin from the Resident Sustainability Advisor (rsa@humboldt.edu) if you live in an on-campus apartment. Check out the Waste Reduction & Resource Awareness Program (WRRAP) at www.humboldt.edu/wrrap for more information on composting.

    2. DON'T TRASH IT, RECYCLE IT! Recycle all bottles, cans, plastic containers #1-7, and aluminum foil in the ‘Beverage Container’ bins around the residence halls. Recycle all mixed paper and cardboard in the bins inside buildings or in the cardboard dumpsters outside the living halls.

    3. E-WASTE. Discard used electronics in the blue E-waste bins in the RESNET office, College Creek mail room, or in front of the library.

    4. Batteries, ink cartridges, disks, and old CFLs can be recycled at the Housing info desk in the J or at the College Creek mail room.

    ENERGY
    5. TURN OFF THE LIGHTS! Something easy to do that will make a big difference. Whenever possible turn off the lights during the day and take advantage of the daylight!

    6. SWITCH TO LEDs! Light Emitting Diode (LED) light bulbs use 90% less energy than a standard incandescent bulb and last ten times longer. LEDs are affordable and available at many local stores.

    7. CURB PHANTOM LOADS! Most of our electronic devices still use energy while plugged in, even when turned the device is turned OFF! To combat phantom loads, unplug items when not in use, or plug them into a power strip and turn the strip off.

    8. ADJUST YOUR CLOTHES, NOT THE THERMOSTAT! Socks, hats, and sweaters make very energy-efficient heaters!
Use natural airflow to control the climate of your room. Use a fan or close your blinds when it’s hot outside. Don’t leave the window open when the heat is on. Turn off the fans when you leave your room.

    9. Don’t let your Refrigerator be an Energy Hog. Is your fridge empty? Turn it OFF and UNPLUG. Leaving for the break? Turn it OFF and UNPLUG.

    CLEANING
    10. REDUCE TOXINS. Check out the array of green cleaners at the Co-op, Murphy's, or visit CCAT (www.humboldt.edu/ccat) to learn how to make your own.

    11. REDUCE WASTE. Use cloths and rags instead of paper towels.

    STUFF
    12. REUSABLE BAGS. Use them. Always. If you happen to end up with a plastic bag, it can be recycled at Safeway.
Buy used. Before buying something new, visit a local thrift store, or browse to see if you can get a used item instead.

  •  Thanks for completing the Green Room Certification Form!

    WHY CERTIFY?
    1. Be a part of the effort to make Cal Poly Humboldt an even greener campus! You have the power to reduce waste, save energy + water, and make sustainable purchases.
