  • "Children are a gift from the LORD; they are a reward from Him." Psalm 127:3

In 1 Samuel 1:27-28, a godly woman named Hannah prayed for years for God to give her a child.  He answered her prayers and she gave birth to a son, whom she named Samuel. When Samuel was born, Hannah prayed these words: "I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of Him. So now I give him to the Lord. For his whole life he will be given over to the Lord."

Because the Lord had granted Hannah's request, she kept her vow, dedicating (set apart) Samuel unto the Lord. We see here a beautiful example of what our attitudes should be towards our children and their relationship to God. We are to do the most we can to "set apart" our children to God until the day that they can make their own choice. By dedicating your children to the Lord, you are makg a vow to raise them in God's ways.

Child Dedication is a special time to publicly commit to put God first in your home and trust Him as your source of direction as you lead your family. It is also a time for you to share your faith in Jesus Christ with your closest friends and family.

Is Dedication the same as Salvation or Baptism?

No. Dedication is not baptism nor a sign of salvation. Child dedication is a great step for your family, but it is not the same thing as salvation or baptism. Salvation is what happens when your child makes a personal decision to trust Jesus alone for their own salvation, once they have the maturity and ability to understand what that means. Baptism is when they decide to go public with that decision. When you dedicate your child, you are committing to raise them in an environment where they hear about Jesus and have an opportunity to accept Him as their Lord and Savior.
