  • San Antonio, Texas is an important Texas city with a rich colonial history. San Antonio has many places and museums worth exploring on your visit.

One of the biggest military bases in the US is located in the city. Many people are proud of their military service as well as their families.

San Antonio visitors should visit the Alamo. It is a historic Spanish mission and fortress complex founded in 1718 and is the location of the Battle of the Alamo in 1836. It is today part of the San Antonio Missions World Heritage Site.

The mission was established to convert the local Native inhabitants to Catholicism and then became secularized in 1793. It was changed to the Alamo and was later converted into a fort during the Mexican War of Independence.

Just a few months after the Texas Revolution began, the Mexican general Martin Perfecto de Cos surrendered the Alamo to a tiny group of Texian soldiers led by William Travis and James Bowie. The Mexican Army stood at the Alamo for over a month, but the defenders managed to hold on over the next few months.

The Mexican infantry launched a massive assault on Texians when they woke up in the morning of the 6th of March. The defense forces were in a position to repel the first wave of attacks and were forced to conserve powder when the subsequent artillery strike became more intense and deadly.

The fight lasted for 90 minutes and featured a lot of hand-to-hand fighting between the Texan defense forces, as well as their Mexican counterparts. American folk legends James Bowie and Davy Crockett were killed in the fight and a few of their soldiers were captured.
