  • Camp Counselor Expectations

The following are expectations of all paid camp counselors.
  • I will dedicate a month of my summer to learning, leading, and growing at Camp Caney. For four weeks of the summer I will work under the direction of the Camp Manager and Camp Director. Before camp, I'll attend counselor training. When camp begins, I'll get to experience weeks of leadership as I care for and nurture the discipleship of children and youth during Pre-Camp, Elementary Camp, Jr. High Camp, and Sr. High Camp. I'll be there to care for them physically, emotionally, and spiritually as they play together, learn together, and grow together.

  • I will serve as a model for good behavior. This includes exhibiting a positive attitude, friendliness to all campers, appropriate playfulness, inclusion of everyone, being a comforting presence, and exhibiting faithfulness.

  • I will be open to learning new ideas and new ways of doing things.

  • I will be ready for an exhausting but rewarding month of working with kids, youth, and adults.

  • I will be prepared for leading small bible studies, having conversations about God (no, you don’t have to have all the answers), and readiness to ask the Spiritual Director for assistance when needed.

  • I will fully participate in all activities including, but not limited to, worship, small groups, swimming at the lake, team building exercises, meals, cabin time, and free time.

  • I will stay on campus and remain present while preparing for camp, the whole time camp is occurring, and for clean up after camp. The only exceptions include running errands or in case of emergency WITH PERMISSION from a Camp Director or Camp Manager.

  • Code of Conduct

As a counselor at Camp Caney, you have many opportunities to connect with campers and change lives (including your own!). With these opportunities come responsibilities. The Code of Conduct is designed to help you make decisions in the way that you represent yourself. It equally applies to all staff, and you must be willing to abide by it to be a Camp Counselor.
  • ALCOHOL: Purchase and use of alcoholic beverages is prohibited while working at Camp Caney, even if you are of age.
  • TOBACCO: The use of any tobacco products are prohibited while working at Camp Caney, even if you are of age. This includes cigarettes, cigars, snuff, chewing tobacco, and e-cigarettes and vape pens.
  • WEAPONS: Firearms, fireworks, knives, or weapons of any kind are prohibited while working at Camp Caney.
  • ILLEGAL SUBSTANCES: Marijuana or other illegal substances are strictly prohibited.
  • RELATIONSHIPS AND CONFLICT: Relationships are important to who we are as human beings. They can be fulfilling, enriching, and a way we experience God’s love. As camp counselors, you will be required to show impartiality and love toward all with whom you come in contact, always seeking to understand and seeking not to judge. If you are in conflict with another, you MAY NOT speak about that person behind their back, and must seek to reconcile with them. If you need help doing so, find the Camp Director or Spiritual Director for advice on how to proceed, and they may provide mediation if necessary. If reconciliation isn’t possible, you must remain cordial with them for the duration of camp, and MAY NOT speak poorly about them in front of campers or with other counselors/staff. You MAY NOT bully or belittle anyone, and you must help our campers not to do so either. In all moments, you must seek to love your neighbor as yourself.
  • ROMANTIC RELATIONSHIPS: Romantic relationships with campers is strictly prohibited, even if they are of adult age. If engaging in a romantic relationship with another counselor, that relationship should never become the focus of camp. It is expected that you will refrain from any sexual activity while employed at Camp Caney.
  • I understand that violation of the Code of Conduct may result in immediate termination from Camp Caney and loss of pay for the summer.
