LIFE-CONTROLLING ISSUES
Culture of Freedom and Vulnerability
First of all, please understand that we do not believe that life-controlling issues necessarily disqualify anyone from serving the Lord, or from serving at Gleanings. Nevertheless, we do believe that they are serious and we must face these issues honestly and turn from them toward Christ. We are a Christian community that is committed to take seriously Jesus' command of repentance and His invitation to restoration. We also believe in Christ's transforming power for our minds as we face our life-controlling issues, confess them vulnerably, and turn toward the love and light of Christ. We are not a group of morally elite, rather we hope to be a community of vulnerability, accountability, truth, and transformation. So, as you continue this application process, please know that we invite you to experience this kind of vulnerability and freedom. Most people in our community have wrestled with life-controlling issues before, so we welcome others who value a culture of godly repentance and vulnerability. We have seen the Lord break down walls, renew minds, reconcile relationships, redeem lives, and restore people to His kingdom.
Some examples of life-controlling issues are...
Extreme fear, addictive behavior, abuse, violence, anger/rage, hiding or lying, gossip, division and dissention, manipulation, habitual immorality, sexual misconduct, pornography addiction, homosexuality, substance abuse, lack of trust, eating-disorders, self-harm, low self-esteem, reclusive behavior, extreme anxiety or depression, constant need for romantic connection, extreme sleep schedule, or other life-controlling issues.
Self-Evaluation
Please seriously and honestly consider if you are currently experiencing any life-controlling issues. Also, consider whether or not you have experienced life-controlling issues recently, within the past 2 years. We encourage you to ask this question of a trusted friend or mentor who is spiritually mature and able to give you honest feedback. Some helpful questions in self-evaluating are... Do I wrestle with any of these issues or others? and, When was the last time I was compelled to act in this way?
Please pray, discern, and consider whether or not you wish to continue this Summer Staff program application and pursue a commitment serving wholeheartedly with Gleanings For The Hungry. Life-controlling issues will significantly impact your commitment as well as those around you. Be aware that the Summer Staff program is a leadership role and requires spiritual maturity, personal vulnerability, hard-working servanthood, personal integrity and purity, commitment and follow-through, respect and honor, submission to authority, and the ability to lead by example.
