Yoakum Point Earth Day Event:
Join Park Rangers at Sunset Bay/Yoakum Point for our Earth Day Invasive English ivy pull! Invasive species of ivy are prevalent throughout the Pacific Northwest and tend outcompete native plants. Lend a hand and help get the park ready before winter begins! Afterwards, Ranger Jake will present an interpretation program while you in enjoy lunch at the Sunset Bay Gazebo.
Volunteers will assist Park Rangers in identifying and eradicating the weed from the park property. This may include:
Pruning, weeding, digging, raking, trimming, weed eating, removing woody debris and vegetation, etc.
Directions:
Yoakum Point is a roadside pull off for a trail head that takes visitors to the beach. Actual address is 90064 Cape Arago Hwy, Coos Bay. This trail head is located about ¼ mile before you get to Sunset Bay Day Use area as you drive south it is on the west side of the road. You will see some white cement bollards marking the small parking area along with a State Park sign for Yoakum Point. There is a small parking area on the east side of the road, please do not block the driveway of a home located there. Look for the orange traffic come on Cape Arago hwy about 20 yards before you reach the trail head.
What to expect:
Participants should be prepared to travel on uneven ground at service site. Work may include bending, twisting, lifting, and making raking or shoveling motions. Volunteers should only take on what they are physically comfortable doing. Service will take place outdoors and volunteers should expect to wear work gloves and use hand tools. Snacks will be provided.
What to wear:
Dress for the weather. Layers and rain gear are always a good idea. Closed toed shoes are recommended. Wear something you don’t mind getting dirty.
What to bring:
*Water Bottle—no water available on site
*Pack a lunch
*Work gloves (we will have some available if you don’t have any)
