    Our Mission

The Art of the Cowgirl Fellowship Program will encourage, promote and invest in the development of emerging artists and makers engaged in the unique arts, trades, and horsemanship of the western lifestyle while celebrating tradition and inspiring innovation through mentorship from established leaders in their fields. Through this program, Art of the Cowgirl will foster creativity and will work to preserve traditional art techniques and functional gear.

The Fellowship Program is Tammy Pate’s original dream of providing an opportunity for western artists to work with masters-- a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn or refine their passion with some of the most talented makers in the business. Whether it be a fine art, functional trade or horsemanship, these fellowships will enrich, empower and educate while honoring our western heritage. The fellowship seeks to remove obstacles such as funding and access for up and coming artists, without restriction of age or location.

  • About Master Photographer Barbara Van Cleve

Barbara has held a camera since she was 11 years old when her parents gave her a “Brownie” camera and a home developing kit.  “My parents gave it to me because I begged for it, I guess. I couldn't draw, I couldn't paint, I couldn't do any of that, and I wanted people to know how great ranching was. I wanted something that would enable me to communicate that wonder and beauty of ranching and the hard stuff too.”

Her youthful interest in photography soon grew into a lifelong commitment. Barbara’s work is in public and private collections in the United States as well as internationally.

Take a look at any of Barbara’s photos and you will be captivated by the emotion and authenticity of the ranching life. “People have told me they really pick up the emotion in my photographs so that they are getting my emotion of appreciation for that life which is what I want, “ shares Barbara. “What a wonderful life it was; hard life, tough life, not always pleasant, but beautiful.”

Barbara has dedicated her life to sharing the lifestyle she loves through her work and also sharing her knowledge and experience with others. “ What good is knowledge if you just keep it to yourself?,” Barbara says.  “If you teach, you can give to so many other people. That sharing came naturally to me.”
