* An upper respiratory infection (URI) is an infection in the nose, sinuses, mouth, and/or throat. It is similar to a cold in humans and often runs its course between 7-21 days, but symptoms can be persistent with higher stress levels. A cat with a URI may have the following symptoms: congestion, lack of appetite, nasal/ocular discharge, sneezing, coughing, or lethargy. Cats with URI recover faster out of shelter due to lower stress levels. There is no special care required, other than monitoring symptoms and contacting us if they persist for more than two weeks, appears to be getting worse, or if you notice green/yellow discharge. Anyone with a cat at home should sanitize their hands before petting their cat.
